Couple dancing tango in Buenos Aires

Tango in Buenos Aires

Spectacular shows, authentic milongas and the passion of a dance declared World Heritage.

Last updated: Abril 2026

Tango was born in the tenement houses of the Riachuelo in the late 19th century and was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2009. Buenos Aires is the world capital of tango, and no visit is complete without experiencing this dance in some form: from theatrical dinner shows to authentic milongas where portenos dance until dawn.

Milongas: where portenos dance

Milongas are the dance halls where locals go to dance tango. Unlike shows, here you are part of the dance. Most offer beginner classes before the milonga starts.

La Viruta (Palermo)

The most popular milonga for young people and tourists. Classes from 7 PM, milonga from 11 PM to 4-5 AM. Relaxed, fun, inclusive. Entry: USD 3-5 (includes class).

La Catedral (Almagro)

A legendary milonga in a converted industrial warehouse. Bohemian atmosphere, art on the walls. Classes at 8 PM, milonga at 11 PM. Entry: USD 3-5.

Salon Canning (Palermo)

Traditional and elegant. Classic tango codes apply (cabeceo to invite, tandas of four songs). Great for watching expert dancers. Entry: USD 5-8.

Beginner tip: You do not need to know how to dance to attend a milonga. La Viruta and La Catedral offer classes included in the entry fee and have a relaxed vibe. Wear comfortable shoes with smooth soles (not sneakers). You can also just watch, drink and enjoy the music.
