Gualeguaychu

Carnaval del Pais — top 3 worldwide alongside Rio and Venice. 11 nights, 3 troupes, 40,000 spectators per night

Last updated: April 2026

Gualeguaychu is a city of 116,000 inhabitants (2022 census) in the southeast of Entre Rios province, sitting at 18 m above sea level where the Gualeguaychu and Uruguay rivers meet, 230 km north of Buenos Aires (3 hours by car via RN 9 + RN 12 + Zarate-Brazo Largo Bridge). Founded on October 18, 1783 by Tomas de Rocamora as "San Jose de Gualeguaychu," it is the national capital of Argentine carnival and home to Carnaval del Pais, officially recognized since 2011 as one of the three biggest carnivals in the world alongside Rio de Janeiro and Venice by IFACCA (International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture Agencies). The Carnival runs every January and February across 11 nights at the Juan Carlos Chirivin Corsodromo (opened 1997, 40,000-spectator capacity, 400 m long, the only permanent carnival venue in Argentina), with three main troupes competing: Mari Mari (historical-social themes), Kamarr (a large-scale spectacle with Afro-Argentine identity) and Papelitos (Caribbean rhythms). Each troupe fields 250 to 400 members, six to eight monumental floats, queens in plumed costumes weighing up to 30 kilos, dancers, live musicians, and choreographies rehearsed all year. The 2026 edition will run across 11 nights: Saturdays Jan 3, 10, 17 and 24 + Saturday Feb 7, Friday Feb 13, Saturday Feb 14, Sunday Feb 15, Monday Feb 16, Saturdays Feb 21 and 28 (the long carnival holiday weekend, Feb 14-16, is the peak). Tickets range from USD 20 (residents, January) to USD 40 (tourists, long carnival weekend), with reserved seats at USD 26-66 and VIP grandstand at USD 80-120 with drinks included. Beyond carnival, Gualeguaychu offers year-round attractions: Termas del Gualeguaychu (8-pool complex with brackish thermal waters, USD 10-15), Nandubaysal Beach (municipal river beach with camping on the Uruguay River), Costanera Promenade (3 km of restaurants and the most vibrant boardwalk in the Argentine littoral), Las Piedras Ecological Reserve (800 ha, birdwatching), Railway Museum (former Urquiza station, 1912), Gualeguaychu Theatre (1914, eclectic architecture), sport fishing for dorado and surubi with local guides (USD 85-130 per day), and the international crossing to Fray Bentos (Uruguay, 60 km via the Libertador General San Martin Bridge), home to the Anglo Quarter Museum (UNESCO 2015 for representing world industrial heritage). Access from Buenos Aires takes 230 km / 3 hours via RN 9 + RN 12 + Zarate Bridge (total tolls USD 8-12), by bus from Retiro (3h30-4h, USD 18-30, Flechabus, Plusmar, Nueva Chevallier with 12+ daily departures) or by car from other Entre Rios cities.

High season sells out fast — book 2-3 months ahead. For the long carnival weekend (Feb 14-16) buy in December. Some travel agencies sell packages bundling ticket + hotel + transfer.

Is the Carnival safe for international tourists?

Very safe. Gualeguaychu is a small city (116,000 inhabitants) with low crime, strong police presence on carnival nights, and a family-oriented atmosphere — many locals attend with kids. Standard precautions: keep your phone in a zipped pocket, do not leave bags unattended, avoid showy jewelry. The Corsodromo is fenced with controlled entry. The walk back to most hotels is well-lit and patrolled. The riskier moment is the bus terminal late at night — share a remise (radio taxi) with other travelers if leaving after 3 AM.

By car: 230 km via RN 9 Panamericana + RN 12 + Zarate-Brazo Largo Bridge. 3 hours. Tolls total USD 8-12. By bus: from Retiro, Flechabus, Plusmar, Nueva Chevallier. Several daily departures, 3h30-4h, USD 18-30 one-way. During carnival season special overnight services run, leaving 6 PM and returning 4-5 AM.

What are the carnival troupes?

Three troupes have competed every year since 1980: Mari Mari (historical-social themes), Kamarr (large-scale spectacle, Afro-Argentine dignity), Papelitos (fun, Caribbean rhythms). Each troupe has 250-400 members, 6-8 enormous floats, queens in plumed costumes weighing up to 30 kg, dancers and live musicians. Each parades for 40-45 minutes. The winning troupe is announced at the end of the season.

What else can I do in Gualeguaychu beyond carnival?

Beach (Gualeguaychu and Uruguay rivers), hot springs (Termas del Gualeguaychu, 8-pool complex with brackish waters), Las Piedras Ecological Reserve, Gualeguaychu Theatre (heritage architecture), San Jose Church, Nandubaysal Municipal Camping (natural beach), Costanera Promenade, Railway Museum. Sport fishing for dorado and surubi. Crossings to Uruguay via Fray Bentos (60 km, with the UNESCO Anglo Quarter Museum).

What about hotels during carnival?
