Argentina is a surprisingly family-friendly destination. The huge distances are the main challenge, but several regions work especially well with kids: Iguazú impresses every age, Bariloche is paradise for kids and teenagers, Buenos Aires has parks and museums for children, and Mendoza combines outdoor activities with family-welcoming wineries. This guide is written by parents who travel with kids.
Iguazú: the first choice
Iguazú Falls is probably Argentina's most child-friendly destination. The Argentine side has three walkway circuits of different lengths. The Lower Circuit (1,700 m) is ideal for families with young kids. The Upper Circuit (1,300 m) has railings and is accessible. The Devil's Throat requires walking ~1,100 m on a walkway to the final viewpoint. The Ecological Jungle Train helps with transfers. For older kids, the boat safari with Iguazú Jungle goes into the rapids beneath the falls (USD 60, 12+ years, prepare to get soaked). Plan 2-3 days for both sides (Argentine + Brazilian).
Bariloche and northern Patagonia
Bariloche is Argentina's classic family destination. In winter, Cerro Catedral is one of South America's best ski resorts with kids' ski school. In summer, boat trips to the Arrayanes Forest, kayaking on the lakes, mountain biking the Circuito Chico, and the chocolate shops downtown are an attraction in themselves. Kids love Colonia Suiza too (Mapuche-style curanto, craft market). Villa La Angostura, 80 km away, is quieter with lake beaches.
Buenos Aires with kids
Buenos Aires has more for kids than you'd expect. Highlights:
- Bosques de Palermo: the city's "Central Park" with lakes, planetarium, Japanese garden, botanical garden and rose garden.
- Tecnópolis: Latin America's largest science park, free.
- Museo Participativo de Ciencias (Centro Cultural Recoleta): hands-on science for kids.
- Tigre and the Delta: 30 km from downtown, boat rides, coastal amusement park.
- MALBA: contemporary art with Sunday kids' activities.
Mendoza with kids
Although Mendoza is famous for wine, it has a lot for families. Parque San Martín is huge with a zoo. Potrerillos and the Valle de Uco offer outdoor activities: family horseback rides, gentle rafting (class II) on the Mendoza river for ages 10+, and many wineries have picnic areas with gardens where kids play while adults taste. Family-friendly wineries: Familia Zuccardi, Trapiche, Lagarde.
Salta and the North with kids
Salta city is great for families: walkable colonial city, Cerro San Bernardo cable car, museums and folk music venues that welcome kids until a certain hour. The Quebrada de Humahuaca is visually striking for kids (coloured mountains, llamas in the villages), but car distances can be long. We recommend no more than 3 days in NW Argentina with young children.
Not recommended with young kids
- El Calafate / Perito Moreno with babies: safe but transfers are long and weather is harsh.
- Serious trekking in El Chaltén: wait for ages 10+.
- Salinas Grandes and Hornocal: extreme altitude (3,500–4,300 m), risky for kids under 8.
- Long winery tours: 3-4 wineries in a day with young kids is exhausting. Better to do 2 with time.
Practical tips
- Internal flights: almost always make sense. Argentina is huge.
- Lodging: apart-hotels are ideal for families (kitchen, space).
- Food: Argentine restaurants are family-friendly and many have kids' menus. Parrillas are safe for children.
- Schedules: Argentine kids dine late (21:00) — restaurants only open kitchens at 20:00. If your kids eat early, look for "open kitchen" or tourist restaurants.
