The Perito Moreno is a 30 km long, 5 km wide glacier with a 60-metre ice wall that towers above Lago Argentino in southern Patagonia — and one of the very few large glaciers on Earth that is still advancing rather than retreating. Located in Los Glaciares National Park in Santa Cruz province (UNESCO World Heritage Site #145, inscribed 1981), the glacier is the headline experience of any Patagonia trip and the reason 250,000+ travellers fly into El Calafate each year. The closest town, El Calafate, sits 78 km away by paved road (RP-11, 1 h 30) and offers the airport (FTE), hotels, restaurants and the agencies that run all glacier excursions. Unlike most glaciers worldwide, Perito Moreno is in roughly stable mass balance: it advances about 2 metres per day while losing the same amount through massive calving events when truck-sized ice blocks crash into the lake — every 4–8 years it dams the Brazo Rico arm of the lake against the Magallanes Peninsula, building pressure until the entire ice barrier ruptures in a spectacular event, last seen in 2024. The park has 4 km of elevated metal walkways (passarelas) on the Magallanes Peninsula opposite the glacier face, organised in 4 colour-coded circuits at different heights, plus optional ice trekking (Mini Trekking, Big Ice) and the Safari Náutico boat ride to the south wall.

The Walkways (Pasarelas)
The 4 km of elevated metal walkways are the standard way to see the glacier — and for most visitors, they\'re more than enough. The walkways are organised in 4 colour-coded circuits descending from the highest balcony down to the lake level. Allow 3–5 hours to walk all four. Yellow (Balcón Superior): 800 m, the highest balcony directly opposite the central seracs of the glacier — best wide-angle shot. Red (Balcón Inferior): 700 m, mid-height with face-on views of the north wall. Green (Pasarela Pequeña): 1,100 m, the longest stretch with multiple lookouts at varying heights. Blue (Costera): 1,200 m at lake level, the closest you can get to the front without going on a boat. Bring water, a windproof jacket (the wind off the ice is cold even in summer), polarised sunglasses (the glare off the ice is intense) and a long lens if you want close-up calving shots.
Ice Trekking: Mini-Trekking and Big Ice
To actually walk on the glacier you need to book with Hielo y Aventura, the sole authorised concessionaire. Two options:
Mini-Trekking (USD 170)
The most popular option. Includes the boat ride from Bajo de las Sombras across Brazo Rico to the south side of the glacier, a short forest walk to the ice edge, then 90 minutes walking on the glacier with crampons attached to your boots. Guides walk you through pressure ridges, blue ice pools and small crevasses — no technical climbing, suitable for ages 8–65 with reasonable fitness. The day finishes with a small whisky over a piece of glacier ice. Total tour duration: 5 hours (12:30–17:30). Wear hiking boots and dress in layers.
Big Ice (USD 250)
For more demanding trekkers ages 18–50. Includes 3.5–4 hours actually walking on the glacier (vs 90 minutes for mini-trek), reaching deeper into the ice with bigger crevasses, lakes and seracs. Same boat transfer + longer forest approach + harder physical day (no medical conditions, good fitness required). Total tour duration: 9 hours (07:30–16:30). Limited daily slots — book 1+ week ahead in peak season.
Safari Náutico (Boat Ride)
If you don\'t want to walk on the glacier but want to get closer to the ice wall than the walkways allow, the Safari Náutico is the boat ride from Puerto Bajo de las Sombras to within ~300 metres of the south wall of the glacier. Operated by the same concessionaire (Hielo y Aventura) and by Solo Patagonia. 1 hour duration, USD 70, 8–9 daily departures. The boat is large and stable; bring a windproof jacket. Best time of day: morning when light hits the wall from the east.
Day-by-Day from El Calafate
Most travellers visit Perito Moreno on a one-day excursion from El Calafate. A typical itinerary:
- 08:00: Pickup from your hotel by shuttle or rental car departure
- 09:30: Park entry checkpoint (have your ticket ready), 30-minute drive through the lenga forest
- 10:00: Arrival at the parking area, walk down to the walkways
- 10:00–13:00: Walk all 4 walkway circuits, watching for calving events (the deep cracks and the loud rifle-shot sound mean ice is about to fall)
- 13:00: Lunch break (cafeteria or packed)
- 14:00–17:00: Either return to walkways for afternoon light, or take the Safari Náutico boat, or do mini-trekking
- 17:00–18:00: Last shuttle departures back to El Calafate
- 18:30–19:30: Back at the hotel
El Calafate as Base
El Calafate is a small town (~28,000 inhabitants) that exists almost entirely because of the glacier. The main street, Avenida del Libertador San Martín, has all the agencies, restaurants, gear shops and most hotels lined up over 8 blocks. Top hotels: EOLO Patagonia\'s Spirit (luxury lodge 25 km out of town, USD 700+), Esplendor El Calafate (mid-range USD 200–400), Hostel del Glaciar Pioneros (backpacker USD 30–50). The Glaciarium museum on the western edge of town is excellent for context (USD 25 entry, 2 hours). For something different, the Reserva Laguna Nimez on the lake shore is a free flamingo and waterbird reserve, walkable from town.
Combining with El Chaltén
Most travellers combine Perito Moreno with El Chaltén, Argentina\'s trekking capital, 220 km north (3 hours on RP-23 + RN-40). El Chaltén is the gateway to the Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre massifs — day hikes to Laguna de los Tres (the iconic Fitz Roy view) and Laguna Torre (Cerro Torre view) are the most-photographed Patagonia trails. A typical Patagonia itinerary: 2 nights El Calafate (glacier day) + 2–3 nights El Chaltén (trekking) + transfer back to FTE airport.
