Argentina is back to expensive but navigable. The blue/MEP dollar, reasonable tipping, low-cost domestic flights and a massive food scene mean USD 100-180/day buys a very complete trip. This 2026 guide breaks down daily budgets by tier (backpacker, mid, comfort, luxury), detailed lodging, food, transport and excursion costs, regional comparison and tricks to pay less. All prices in USD using MEP dollar rate as reference (about ARS 1,300/USD in April 2026).

The blue / MEP dollar
In 2026 the exchange gap shrank significantly. Now the "blue" trades just 5-15% above official. What works:
Western Union: receive pesos at MEP rate — legal, near-blue rate, no risk. Branches in BA, Mendoza, Bariloche, Calafate.
Foreign card: since 2024 purchases convert at MEP rate automatically. Convenient for hotels, restaurants and large purchases.
Cuevas (BA Florida + Lavalle): safe, give real blue. Always request fresh unmarked bills, USD 100 are best.
NEVER exchange at Ezeiza airport: worst rate in the country.
Saving tips
Book low-cost flights (Flybondi, JetSmart) 30+ days ahead for best prices.
Eat at bodegones (Lo de Carlitos, El Preferido, La Cabrera midday) instead of touristy: same quality, 40-60% less.
Carrefour and Coto for self-service: wine USD 5-12 bottle, bread, cold cuts, fruit. Picnic in Palermo or Recoleta.
Free walking tours in BA, Mendoza, Salta: excellent and you tip (USD 10-15).
Free museum days: MALBA free Wednesdays, Bellas Artes always free.
Bus instead of flight on distances under 600 km (BA-Mar del Plata, BA-Rosario, Mendoza-San Juan).
Lodging outside the center: in Mendoza, Lujan or Maipu are 30-40% cheaper than the capital.
SUBE card (BA): load USD 5 and pay all subway and buses at local price, without foreign card surcharges.
Most expensive vs cheapest — surprises
More expensive than expected: boutique hotels in Calafate and Ushuaia (USD 220-380 night at 3-4★), premium glacier excursions (Big Ice USD 450), iconic Mendoza wines (USD 80-300 bottle at winery), top BA restaurants (Don Julio USD 80-130 cover).
Cheaper than expected: quality asado (USD 18-35 cover at good steakhouse), mid wine at supermarket (USD 6-15 excellent bottle), Argentine coffee (USD 2-4 great espresso at any bakery), BA public transit (USD 0.30-0.50 any ride). Private services (driver, guide, Pilates) remain in competitive USD vs Europe or USA.

What is the blue dollar and should I use it?
The "blue" is the parallel, unofficial exchange rate. In 2026 it is partly normalized: the gap with the official rate dropped to 5-15% from the 100% peak in 2023. Use MEP dollar via Western Union (legal, near-blue rate) or recognized cuevas (Florida + Lavalle in BA). Bring fresh USD 100 bills without marks: best rate.
Card or cash?
Foreign cards have automatic MEP exchange since 2024 — a good option. But USD cash still gets best prices in boutique hotels, markets and non-app taxis. Bring 60% cash + 40% card. Fresh USD 100 bills are the best; USD 50 also fine; USD 20 and below worse rate.
How much does a week in Argentina cost?
7 days vary by route. BA only: USD 700-2,500. BA + Iguazu: USD 1,400-3,500. BA + Mendoza: USD 1,500-3,800. Includes hotel, food, tours but not international flight. Domestic flights: USD 90-180 per leg.
What is most expensive in Argentina?
Patagonia (Calafate, Bariloche, Ushuaia) is the priciest region: hotels 30-50% above BA, food 40-60% more, premium excursions. Premium wine in Mendoza and signature restaurants in BA also climb. Cheapest proportionally: NOA (Salta, Tucuman, Jujuy) and Litoral (Corrientes, Chaco).
What is surprisingly cheap?
Argentine wine (excellent bottle USD 8-25 at supermarket, USD 15-45 at restaurant). The asado (cover USD 18-35 at quality steakhouse). Empanadas and pizza (street food USD 2-5). Public transport in BA (subway and buses USD 0.30-0.60). Coffees and bakeries (USD 2-5 great espresso + medialuna).
Tips and gratuities in Argentina?
Restaurants: 10% tip accepted, not mandatory (cubierto separate). Taxi: rounding up. Boutique hotel: USD 1-2 to bellboy, USD 2-5 to room service. Tours: USD 5-15 to guide (proportional to duration). Aggressive tipping is not local custom.
How much does eating out cost?
Bodegon / popular steakhouse: USD 8-15 full cover (starter + main + dessert + water). Mid-range restaurant: USD 18-35. Signature restaurant: USD 50-120 (Don Julio, Tegui, El Preferido). Wine: USD 12-45 bottle at restaurant.
Bus or domestic flight?
For distances <600 km bus may work. For >800 km flying is win-win (time + comfort). Example BA-Mendoza: bus 14h USD 60-110 vs flight 1h50 USD 120-220. If trip is 14 days or less, fly always. If 21+ days with tight budget, mix: flights to far destinations (Calafate, Iguazu) and bus to closer ones (Mendoza, Salta).
Hostels or Airbnb?
Hostels in BA and major cities: USD 18-35 dorm, USD 45-75 private double. Airbnb: USD 35-80 studio in BA, USD 55-130 in Mendoza/Salta. Tip: Airbnb usually better value for 4-7 nights; hostels for social groups and backpackers. Boutique 3-4★ hotels are USD 80-180.
