Coatis, toucans, butterflies, jaguar — Complete wildlife guide to the Parana rainforest

Last updated: April 2026

Iguazu National Park and the surrounding Parana rainforest form one of Argentina's most biodiverse ecosystems, protecting 67,720 hectares of subtropical rainforest (lat -25.6800, lng -54.4400). This remnant of the interior Atlantic Forest harbours extraordinary fauna: over 450 bird species (including 5 toucan species), 80 mammal species (including the jaguar, the Americas' largest feline), 1,500 butterfly species, and over 250 fish species. From the omnipresent coatis walking among tourists to the elusive jaguar deep in the forest, this guide details where and when to see each animal.

Wildlife Spotting Locations

Inside the National Park

The falls circuits (Upper, Lower and Devil's Throat) offer casual sightings of coatis, monkeys, lizards, butterflies and birds. For focused wildlife watching, the Macuco Trail (7 km round trip, 3-4 hours) is the best fauna trail.

Guira Oga Bird Centre

A bird rescue and rehabilitation centre 5 km from Puerto Iguazu. See toucans, eagles, owls and parrots up close. 1.5-hour guided visits. Entry: USD 10-15.

Animal Guide

Coatis (Nasua nasua)

The most visible animals in the park. Walk in family groups along trails. Important: do not feed them (USD 100 fine), keep 2 metres distance, they have sharp claws and can bite.

Toucans (5 Species)

Iguazu has 5 toucan species: the toco toucan (largest, 20 cm orange beak), green-billed toucan, saffron toucanet, chestnut-eared aracari and lettered aracari. Best seen at dawn and dusk in the Macuco Trail area.

Butterflies (1,500+ Species)

The region has Argentina's highest concentration of butterfly species. The blue morpho (15 cm wingspan, iridescent metallic blue) is the star. Most active 10:00-15:00 in sunny trail areas.

Jaguar (Panthera onca)

The jaguar (yaguarete) inhabits the park but seeing one is extremely rare (less than 0.1% of visitors). They are nocturnal and elusive. An estimated 80-100 individuals live in the entire Misiones forest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it easy to see toucans in Iguazu?

Yes. Toucans are relatively common in the National Park and around Puerto Iguazu. The toco toucan (orange beak) is the most frequent. Seen flying between treetops, especially at dawn and dusk. With a specialist guide, practically guaranteed.

Are coatis dangerous?

Coatis are not aggressive by nature but are habituated to tourists and can bite or scratch if fed or cornered. They have sharp claws. Do not feed them (USD 100 fine), keep food bags away and maintain 2 metres distance.

Can you see the jaguar?

Extremely rare. The jaguar is nocturnal, elusive, and its density in the Misiones forest is low (80-100 individuals in the entire region). Less than 0.1% of visitors see one. Camera traps record it frequently, indicating it is present though invisible.

Which is the best trail for wildlife?

The Macuco Trail by far. 7 km round trip through dense forest, away from the crowds of the falls circuits. Ends at Arrechea Falls (23 m). Monkeys, toucans, trogons, butterflies and tracks of larger mammals can be seen. Ideal at dawn with a guide.
