The Ruins of San Ignacio Mini are the most impressive and best-preserved Jesuit mission in South America. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, this mission was founded in 1632 and at its peak housed over 3,000 Guarani inhabitants living in a unique social experiment that combined European religion with indigenous culture, agriculture and artistry.
Located 250 km south of Puerto Iguazu (about 3.5 hours by road), the ruins are one of the most popular day trips from Iguazu Falls, usually combined with a visit to the Wanda Mines en route. The site reveals the architectural ambition of the Jesuit missions: a vast central plaza, a church with intricate sandstone carvings, residential blocks, workshops and a system of roads that once connected 30 missions across Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.

History
The Jesuit missions (reducciones) were established across the region from the early 1600s. The Jesuits taught the Guarani European agriculture, music, architecture and religion, while the Guarani contributed their deep knowledge of the land, yerba mate cultivation and craftsmanship. The missions became prosperous communities with churches, schools, workshops and farms. After the Jesuits were expelled from the Spanish Empire in 1767, the missions were abandoned and gradually reclaimed by the jungle. San Ignacio Mini was rediscovered in the early 20th century and partially restored.
What to See
- The Church: The most impressive structure, with elaborate sandstone carvings mixing Baroque European and Guarani motifs
- The Plaza: The vast central square around which the mission was organised
- Residential blocks: Long rows of stone housing where Guarani families lived

Tip: If your tour arrives early enough, ask about the light and sound show at dusk. It projects the history of the mission onto the ruins with narration and music -- a genuinely moving experience that brings the stones to life.
