Yerba Mate Route

Plantations, drying houses and tastings — The complete mate journey in Misiones

Last updated: April 2026

The Yerba Mate Route is a tourist-productive circuit through the plantations, drying houses and yerba mate establishments of Misiones province, the world's main yerba mate producer (lat -27.4833, lng -54.7500). Mate is much more than a drink in Argentina: it is a cultural, social and identity ritual uniting 14 million daily consumers. Misiones concentrates 90% of national production, with over 170,000 hectares of Ilex paraguariensis. The circuit includes visits to Las Marias (producer of Taraguei, the country's best-selling brand), artisanal drying houses, and tastings of different varieties. Campo Viera, Obera and Apostoles are the main centres.

How to Tour the Yerba Mate Route

From Puerto Iguazu: first visitable establishments are 200-250 km south on RN 12. Campo Viera and Obera are 280-300 km (3.5-4 hours). From Posadas: Campo Viera is 90 km (1.5 hours), Apostoles 70 km (1 hour). By rental car or organised tour.

What to See and Do

Las Marias Estate (Taraguei)

In Apostoles, Las Marias produces Taraguei, Union and La Merced brands. The 2-hour guided tour covers the yerba fields, industrial processing plant, ageing warehouse (12-24 months) and comparative tasting of premium lines. Monday-Friday visits with prior booking.

Artisanal Drying Houses

In Campo Viera, Obera and rural areas, small producers show the complete process: sapecado (initial flash drying with direct flame), barbacua drying (traditional wood-fired oven, 8-24 hours), canchado (coarse grinding) and ageing (6-24 months). Some let you participate in the harvest. An authentic rural experience.

Mate Tastings

Several establishments offer mate tastings similar to wine tastings: try yerba of different varieties (mild, intense, with stems, stemless, flavoured), learn to prepare the perfect mate, ideal water temperature (70-80 degrees C) and differences between aged and fresh yerba.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you visit the Taraguei factory?

Yes. Las Marias in Apostoles offers free guided tours Monday-Friday with at least 48 hours advance booking. The 2-hour tour includes yerba fields, processing plant, ageing warehouse and tasting.

What is the difference between yerba with and without stems?

Yerba "con palo" (with stems) includes twigs that give a milder, longer-lasting flavour. "Despalada" (stemless) has only leaves, resulting in a more intense, bitter flavour with more body. On the route you can taste both and understand the differences.

Is it suitable for families with children?

Yes. Children especially enjoy the artisanal drying houses where they can see the freshly harvested green leaves, the fire of the sapecado and the complete process. Some establishments have games and farm animals.

How many days do I need for the complete route?

One day covers an industrial establishment (Las Marias) and an artisanal one. With 2 days you can do a more complete tour including Obera, Campo Viera and Apostoles. Ideally combine in a 3-4 day Misiones circuit including Iguazu and San Ignacio.
