The ruins of San Ignacio Mini are the best-preserved Jesuit-Guarani reduction in all of South America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984 (lat -27.2580, lng -55.5347). Founded in 1610 and relocated to its current site in 1696, this mission once housed over 3,000 Guarani people. The impressive red sandstone walls, hand-carved, still rise several metres, revealing the three-nave church, the 130 x 70 metre central plaza, communal dwellings, school, workshops and cemetery. Every night a light and sound show projects the mission's history onto the ruins. San Ignacio is 240 km from Puerto Iguazu and 60 km from Posadas on RN 12.
