Las Lenas is the largest and most complete ski resort in Argentina, and one of the most important snow destinations in South America. Sitting at 2,240 meters altitude in the Malargue department of southern Mendoza province, Las Lenas offers 64 runs across 33 km of skiable terrain, 13 lifts and a vertical drop of 1,230 meters — the greatest skiable vertical in the Southern Hemisphere. What truly puts it on the global map is its off-piste terrain: when conditions line up, Las Lenas delivers world-class powder on par with legendary resorts like Jackson Hole or Chamonix.

Opened in 1983, Las Lenas was conceived from day one as an integrated European-style mountain resort: all the lodging, dining and nightlife is packed into a compact village at the foot of the slopes, allowing genuine ski-in/ski-out access. Unlike other Argentine ski areas that lean on a nearby town, Las Lenas is a self-contained destination with a personality of its own — famous for both its excellent skiing and its intense after-dark scene, which has earned it the nickname "the Ibiza of the snow."

The runs: for every level
Las Lenas serves up extremely varied terrain that satisfies absolute beginners and expert backcountry skiers alike. The run distribution is balanced: 11 green (beginner), 18 blue (intermediate), 19 red (advanced) and 16 black (expert). Greens and blues cluster in the lower mountain with quick access from the village. Reds and blacks fill the upper half, with spectacular Cordillera views.
For beginners
The beginner area features magic carpets and a slow chairlift (Eros) that opens onto wide, gentle pitches. Las Lenas runs a ski and snowboard school with bilingual (Spanish/English) certified instructors. Group lessons start at USD 40-50 for 2 hours, and private lessons start at USD 80-100 per hour. A full equipment rental (skis, poles, boots) goes from USD 30-40/day.
For intermediates and advanced
The Marte chairlift (high-speed quad) is the resort's main artery and opens up the broadest spread of blue and red runs. The Minerva sector has wider, faster pistes. For advanced skiers, black runs like Apolo and Vulcano serve up demanding descents with moguls and steep pitch.
Off-piste: the Las Lenas secret
The real treasure of Las Lenas is its off-piste terrain. Once Marte opens up the upper bowl and snow conditions cooperate, you get access to couloirs (narrow chutes between rocky walls), wide-open bowls and untouched faces with powder that can run up to 2 meters deep. The couloirs of Las Lenas are legendary in the global ski community: names like "Andes," "Shakespeare" and "El Collar" pull freeriders from around the world. A certified guide and full safety gear (transceiver, shovel, probe) are essential if you ride off-piste.
Snowboard and snowpark
Snowboarding is allowed on every run at Las Lenas. The resort has a snowpark with rails, boxes, jumps in different sizes and a halfpipe. The park gets refreshed every season and hosts national-level competitions. Snowboard rentals start at USD 30-35/day. Snowboard lessons run at the same rates as ski lessons.
Night skiing
Las Lenas offers night skiing on Wednesdays and Saturdays during peak season (July-August). The lit run lets you ski from 8 PM to 11 PM, a magical experience under the stars with the Cordillera as backdrop. Night skiing is included in the season pass; day-pass holders can buy a night-only pass for USD 25-35.
Apres-ski and nightlife
The Las Lenas nightlife is legendary and very much part of the experience. The village concentrates bars, pubs and a flagship nightclub (UFO Point) that runs until 5 AM. Apres-ski kicks off at 5 PM in the bars at the base of the slopes, continues at the village restaurants, and finishes at the club. The vibe is festive but easygoing — a mix of families, friend groups and international skiers.
- Innsbruck: The classic apres-ski bar, right at the base of the slopes. Beers, cocktails and live music.
- Pista 4: Restaurant-bar with solid food and a calmer atmosphere.
- UFO Point: The Las Lenas nightclub. Open Thursday to Saturday in peak season. Cover from USD 10-15.
- Casino: Las Lenas has a casino that operates throughout the season.

Where to stay at Las Lenas
All lodging at Las Lenas sits in the village at the foot of the slopes, which guarantees ski-in/ski-out access or a short walk to the lifts. Options range from family aparthotels to the 5-star Piscis hotel.
- Hotel Piscis (5-star): The most luxurious in the resort. Spa, heated pool, gourmet restaurant. From USD 250-400/night (half board).
- Hotel Virgo (4-star): Excellent value. Right at the base of the slopes. From USD 150-250/night.
- Aparthotel Aries (3-star): Apartments with kitchens, ideal for families. From USD 100-180/night.
- Aparthotel Acuario: The most affordable option in the village. Functional apartments. From USD 80-120/night.
- Refugios and hostels in Malargue: 70 km from the resort. From USD 20-40/night. Daily transfer required.
Malargue as an alternative base
The town of Malargue, 70 km from Las Lenas (1 hour by car), offers significantly cheaper lodging. Hotels from USD 30-60/night, hostels from USD 15/night, and broader dining options. The trade-off is the daily commute (1 hour each way) on a mountain road that can close after heavy snow. Several Malargue hotels run a daily Las Lenas shuttle (USD 15-20 round trip per person). It is a solid pick for tight budgets if the weather cooperates. On top of that, Malargue is the gateway to La Payunia (the world's densest concentration of volcanoes, 890+) and the Caverna de las Brujas — experiences you can fold into the ski week over 5-7 days.
How to get to Las Lenas
From Mendoza city
Las Lenas is 450 km south of Mendoza (5 hours by car on Route 40 south to Malargue, then 70 km of mountain road). The options:
- Rental car: The most flexible choice. Route 40 is in good shape to Malargue, then a mountain road that requires chains or snow tires. Rentals from USD 40-50/day with chains included.
- Private transfer: Door-to-door transfer services from USD 150-200 per person round trip. Book in advance.
- Bus to Malargue + transfer: Mendoza-Malargue bus (6 hours, USD 15-20), then a local Malargue-Las Lenas transfer (USD 15-20 each leg).
- All-inclusive packages: Many operators bundle Mendoza transport + lodging + ski pass from USD 500-800 per person per week.
From Buenos Aires
Flying to Mendoza (2 hours) and continuing overland (5 hours) is the most common path. During ski season, some agencies run charter flights direct to Malargue. By bus, Buenos Aires-Malargue takes 16-18 hours with companies like Andesmar.
Best time to ski Las Lenas
The ski season runs from mid-June through late September. Each window has its perks:
- June (opening): Early-season snow, fewer runs open, lowest prices. Ideal if you are flexible and do not need 100% of the mountain open.
- July: The most popular month. Argentine winter holidays (second half). Best snow, full mountain, but maximum crowds and prices.
- August: Excellent accumulated base, fewer people than July, moderate prices. The best month for balance between snow, price and tranquility.
- September: Spring snow, longer milder days, empty slopes, low prices. Perfect for skiers who prioritize peace. Possible early closure if the season runs short.
