San Rafael is Mendoza's second wine region and one of the most complete destinations in Cuyo, ideal for those seeking to combine wine tourism with adventure and nature. Located 230 km south of the Mendoza capital, this city of 120,000 inhabitants offers a radically different experience from the wineries of Lujan de Cuyo or Valle de Uco: here the wineries are family-run, prices are more accessible and the pace is decidedly more relaxed. But what truly distinguishes San Rafael is Canon del Atuel, a 40 km gorge carved by the river in colorful rock that offers rafting, kayaking, zip-lining and landscapes that rival the canyons of the American west.
