Refugio Frey

The iconic Bariloche trek — 1,700m glacial lagoon ringed by granite spires. 11 km one way, 500m elevation

Last updated: April 2026

Refugio Emilio Frey is the most famous and most photographed mountain refuge in Bariloche and one of the most iconic trekking sites in Argentine Patagonia, located at 1,700 m above sea level on a turquoise glacial lagoon ringed by sharp granite spires reaching 2,400 m, forming a natural amphitheater that recalls the Chamonix massif (France) or Yosemite (USA). Built in 1957 by Club Andino Bariloche (CAB, founded 1931, the oldest mountaineering institution in Argentina) in honor of pioneering Argentine-Swiss alpinist Emilio Frey (1893-1946), the refuge is part of the Nahuel Huapi National Park refuge network (12 refuges across the cordillera enabling multi-day traverses). It is a two-story stone and Patagonian cypress-wood building with capacity for 60 beds in shared rooms (no private rooms), a central wood stove, common kitchen and a long communal table where trekkers dine together in classic alpine atmosphere. The classic trek from Villa Catedral (base of Cerro Catedral) covers 11 km one way, 500 m of elevation gain and takes 4 to 5 hours at moderate pace, medium-high difficulty for the average trekker. The Club Andino-marked trail crosses native lenga and coihue forest, then alpine meadows with summer wildflowers, finally rocky ascent to the lagoon's frontal moraine where the refuge appears at the foot of the spires. The glacial lagoon beside the refuge has an intense turquoise color from glacial silt, water temperature 4-8°C even in midsummer, ringed by a granite amphitheater considered one of the world's top 5 sport-climbing spots outside Europe, with 200+ routes from grade 5.6 to 5.13 (YDS — Yosemite Decimal System). Famous spires include Aguja Frey, Aguja M2 and El Campanile, first climbed by European alpinists in the 1950s. The refuge is also the gateway to multi-day traverses: Frey to Jakob (2 days through Brecha Negra pass), Frey to López (1 day crossing through Cerro Catedral) and the legendary 4-Refuge Traverse (Frey-San Martín-Italia-López, 3-4 days, one of Argentina's most famous mountain traverses). 2026 Club Andino rates: shared bunk USD 28-38/night, half-board USD 18-25 extra, lakeside camping USD 10-15/pax. Open year-round but in winter (June-October) only with advanced winter mountaineering experience (1-2 m snow, avalanche risk on certain slopes). Recommended season for amateur trekkers is November to April with peak December-March. To reach Villa Catedral from Bariloche center: 19 km on Avenida de los Pioneros (25 min by car, 45 min on bus line 50 at USD 0.80). Alternative: ride the Las Lengas chairlift up Cerro Catedral (USD 20 one way, year-round) and walk 6 km from the top to the refuge (3-4h), saving 400m of elevation and 5 km. Book the refuge at clubandino.org up to 3 months ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Refugio Frey?

Refugio Emilio Frey is the most famous of the 12 mountain refuges around Bariloche, located at 1,700 m altitude beside a glacial lagoon ringed by sharp granite spires reminiscent of Chamonix or Yosemite. Built in 1957 by Club Andino Bariloche, it belongs to the Nahuel Huapi National Park refuge network. It operates year-round (with reservations) as a base for trekkers and rock climbers. The granite of the Frey spires is considered one of the world's top 5 sport-climbing rocks outside Europe, with 200+ routes from grade 5.6 to 5.13. Named after Emilio Frey, an Argentine-Swiss mountaineering pioneer who died in 1946.

How do I get to Refugio Frey?

Two main routes: from Villa Catedral (the popular one) — from the base of Cerro Catedral it is 11 km one way, 500m elevation gain, 4-5 hours of trek. From Piedras Blancas (alternative, less crowded) — 8 km one way, more technical. You can also ride the Las Lengas chairlift at Cerro Catedral (summer, USD 20 one way) and walk 6 km / 3-4h from the top. To reach Villa Catedral from Bariloche: 19 km on Av. de los Pioneros, 25 min by car, line 50 bus every 30 min USD 0.80.

How much to overnight at Refugio Frey?

2026 Club Andino Bariloche rates: shared bunk (60 beds) USD 28-38 per night. Half-board (breakfast + dinner) USD 18-25 extra. Lakeside camping USD 10-15/person/night. Sleeping-bag rental USD 5. No private rooms. Reserve at clubandino.org (in winter book 2-3 months ahead). Open year-round but in winter only with experienced guide (snow accumulation, avalanche risk).

Do I need technical gear?

For a standard day trek (no overnight, 10h round trip): hiking boots with aggressive sole, day pack, 2L water minimum, energy lunch, waterproof windbreaker (essential — weather changes fast), beanie, gloves, SPF 50+, basic first-aid kit. In winter add crampons, ice axe, mountaineering glasses, thermal layers. For overnight: sleeping bag (or rent USD 5), thermal base layer, headlamp. No technical climbing gear required for the basic trek; required for routes up the spires.

Can I do Frey without experience?

For the standard summer trek (November-April), yes, with average fitness. Trail is well marked with constant traffic. Official difficulty: medium-high (500m elevation, 10 km total). In winter (June-October) requires winter mountaineering experience and a certified guide — occasional fatalities of unprepared climbers. The granite spire routes require advanced rock-climbing experience. Friendly trek season is November-April with peak December-March.

What can you do at the refuge?

Day trek to Frey and back (10h, the classic), overnight at the refuge with home-style dinner at the communal table (alpine refuge experience), swim in the glacial lagoon (4-8°C, summer only), rock climbing on the granite spires (with own gear or guide USD 180-280/day), traverse trekking to other refuges (Frey to Jakob, 2 days; Frey to López, 1 day; 4-Refuge Traverse, 3-4 days), night photography (exceptional skies), digital detox (no cell signal).

Can I go to Frey in winter?

Yes, but only with advanced winter mountaineering experience or a certified guide. June-October the trail can be buried under 1-2 m of snow, with avalanche risk on certain slopes. The refuge stays open with reduced capacity. Temperatures: -15°C to -5°C nights, -5°C to +5°C day. Required gear: snowshoes, crampons, ice axe, alpine clothing. Group of 4+ recommended. Alternative winter approaches (more technical) via Lomada del Medio.

How to book the refuge?

Book online at clubandino.org (Club Andino Bariloche manages the refuge). Reservations open up to 3 months ahead. In high season (December-February and July) book 1-2 months out. Process: (1) pick date and number of nights, (2) pay 30% online deposit, (3) receive booking code, (4) check in at the CAB office in Bariloche the day before to confirm and collect refuge tickets. Cancellations 72h+ ahead refunded 70%.
