Last updated: April 2026

El Bolson is a town of 25,000 inhabitants in a fertile mountain valley 130 km south of Bariloche (lat -41.9667, lng -71.5333). Declared a "non-nuclear zone and ecological municipality" in the 1980s, El Bolson earned fame as Patagonia's hippie town, attracting artisans, organic producers and craft brewers. Its greatest symbol is the Regional Fair on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays: Patagonia's most famous artisan market with 300+ stalls. El Bolson is the national hops capital and craft beer hub, with 30+ breweries. The area produces raspberries, cherries, strawberries and other berries transformed into artisanal jams, liqueurs and ice cream. Spectacular treks include the Cajon del Azul and nearby Lago Puelo National Park.
