Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time for wildlife in Patagonia?

September-November is the golden season: whales at peak, penguins arriving, elephant seal and sea lion pups. But there is wildlife year-round: orcas in March, whales from June, penguins until April.

Can you see orcas beach-hunting?

Yes, at Punta Norte (Peninsula Valdes) between February and April, orcas beach themselves to hunt sea lion pups. A behaviour unique in the world. However, it is unpredictable and may require days of waiting. Best month is March.

How many penguins are at Punta Tombo?

Approximately 1 million Magellanic penguins (200,000 breeding pairs plus juveniles) during peak season (November-February). It is the world's largest continental penguin colony.

Is it possible to see pumas in Patagonia?

Possible but very difficult. Pumas are extremely elusive in the wild in Argentina. Best chances: specialised photographic safaris at estancias (USD 200-400/day). In Torres del Paine (Chile) they are more commonly sighted.
