Choosing when to visit Patagonia can completely define your experience. This vast region offers radically different activities depending on the season: from trekking under the austral summer sun to powder skiing in winter. Here we explain month by month what to expect of the climate, which activities are available and when to find the best prices for your 2026 trip.
Patagonia has unpredictable weather in any season. Wind is a constant, rain can appear without warning and you can experience four seasons in a single day. The golden rule is to dress in layers and always carry a waterproof windbreaker, regardless of the month.
High season: December to February (summer)
The austral summer is the most popular time to visit. Temperatures are the most pleasant of the year (8-22C in Bariloche, 5-18C in Calafate, 4-15C in Ushuaia), days are extremely long (up to 17 hours of light in Ushuaia) and all trails, routes and tourist services operate at 100%. January and February are the most in-demand months with accommodation prices 40-60% higher than low season. December is an excellent intermediate month: pleasant weather, long days, but not yet peak tourism.
Shoulder season: October-November and March-April
Spring (October-November) and autumn (March-April) offer the best value for money all year. In spring, Patagonian forests fill with wildflowers. In autumn, forests of lenga and nire turn red, orange and gold, creating photogenic landscapes rivalling New England or Japan. Temperatures range 2-15C. Some services reduce frequency but all main destinations remain operational.
Low season: May to September (winter)
The Patagonian winter is cold, windy and has short days (7-8 hours of light in June-July), but offers unique experiences. The star is skiing: Cerro Catedral in Bariloche is South America's largest ski resort (season June-October) and Cerro Castor in Ushuaia is the world's most southerly. The Perito Moreno Glacier can be visited year-round, though mini-trekking does not operate June-August.
