Trelew is a city of 97,000 inhabitants in the lower Chubut River valley, founded in 1886 by Welsh settlers who had arrived 21 years earlier (1865) on the ship Mimosa to escape British cultural assimilation pressure on Wales. The name combines Welsh "Tre" (town) with "Lew" (short for Lewis, after Lewis Jones, the colony leader). Together with the older Welsh towns of Gaiman (1874) and Rawson (1865, today the provincial capital), Trelew anchors the unique Patagonian Welsh cultural region — the only place in the Americas where the Welsh language and traditions are preserved at scale, with about 20% of the local population having Welsh ancestry, bilingual schools, the annual National Eisteddfod music festival every October, and the famous Welsh tea-time ritual at historic chapels and tea houses. Beyond Welsh heritage, Trelew is internationally famous for the Egidio Feruglio Paleontological Museum (MEF), considered Argentina's premier dinosaur museum and one of the most important in South America. The MEF houses fossils of Patagotitan mayorum, the largest known dinosaur (40 meters long, 70 tons, 100 million years old, discovered 2014 in central Chubut), original Eoraptor fossils (230 million years, among the oldest dinosaurs known) and complete plesiosaur skeletons; modern interactive exhibits with real-size replicas attract over 100,000 visitors per year. The city also serves as the commercial gateway to central coastal Patagonia: Almirante Marcos A. Zar Airport (TRW) is the only one with regular flights from Buenos Aires (AEP-TRW, 2h, USD 80-200), making Trelew the practical base for visits to the Valdés Peninsula (UNESCO whale watching, 130 km north), Punta Tombo (the largest Magellanic penguin colony in South America, 165 km south), and Gaiman (Welsh tea-time, 17 km west). Trelew's downtown is functional rather than charming, but contains historic gems including the Capilla Tabernáculo (1880, the oldest Welsh chapel still in use), the Salesian Chapel (1899), the Plaza Independencia, and the regional history museum at the old railway station. Most visitors stay 1-2 nights in Trelew, using it as a launching point for Gaiman and Punta Tombo, while wildlife-focused travelers prefer beachfront Puerto Madryn 65 km north for whale watching access.
