Estancia Harberton is the oldest ranch in Tierra del Fuego, founded in 1886 by the Anglican missionary Thomas Bridges (author of the first Yaghan-English dictionary and a pioneer of dialogue with the indigenous peoples of Tierra del Fuego), located 85 kilometers east of Ushuaia on the shore of the Beagle Channel, in the southernmost province of Argentine Patagonia. It is a National Historic Monument, still operated by direct descendants of the Bridges family (fourth generation, who maintain the original 1886 compound with its chapel, main house and stables). Combined with Martillo Island — a small island in the Beagle Channel opposite the ranch, home to a colony of 3,000 pairs of Magellanic penguins and 30 pairs of Gentoo penguins (occasionally a solitary King penguin) — it makes up the top-recommended day trip in Tierra del Fuego and the only excursion in all of Argentina where you can actually walk among the penguins (versus the distance-only viewing at Punta Tombo, Cabo Vírgenes and Cabo Dos Bahías, which are limited to elevated boardwalks or 50-100 m distances). The exclusive operator for landings on Martillo Island is Piratour (a provincial concession granted in 1991 and renewed by season), which strictly caps tourist pressure at 20 people per shift, 5 shifts per day (100 people max/day) during the October 15 - April 15 season (closed the rest of the year due to ice and rough seas). The classic full-day tour (8-10 hours, USD 180-280 per person) leaves Ushuaia at 8 AM by bus along scenic RN 3 east (a 1.5-hour drive through lenga forests and the Beagle Channel coast), arrives at Estancia Harberton for a tour of the 1886 main compound (chapel, main house, stables, garden of Yaghan medicinal plants), continues with a 2-hour guided visit to the Acatushun Museum with a biologist guide (the museum was founded in 2001 by American marine biologist Natalie Goodall, married to a Bridges descendant, and is recognized by National Geographic as one of the most important scientific museums in South America, with 2,800 marine-mammal specimens and 2,300 bird specimens collected on regional beaches over decades — all from natural mortality, with full mounted skeletons and didactic display cases), an optional lunch at the ranch restaurant (lamb roasted al asador, dessert, coffee — USD 35-55 extra), boarding a covered Zodiac to Martillo Island, a guided 1-hour walk on the island at the regulatory 3-meter minimum distance from the penguins (curious birds sometimes approach within 50 cm), the return by sea to the ranch, and the bus transfer back to Ushuaia arriving 6-7 PM. Book exclusively at piratour.com.ar 2-4 weeks in advance (high-season December-February requires 4-6 weeks). Best time: November-February, when penguins are nesting with chicks and behavior is most active (October-November: penguins arriving, building nests; December-January: newborn chicks with intense parenting, iconic photos; February-March: larger chicks learning to swim). Always pack warm layers, hat, gloves, SPF 50+ sunscreen and sturdy shoes with good grip even in midsummer (5-15°C / 41-59°F on the island with strong wind dropping the wind chill). The ranch also offers limited lodging in the Casco Antiguo (4 boutique rooms, USD 280-380 per night with breakfast, historic setting, Beagle Channel views, 3-6 months booking lead time, closed May-Sep) — the premium option for travelers who want a deeper experience with multiple excursions (Martillo Island, museum, ranch trekking, birdwatching) without the day-tour rush. Access by self-drive (high-clearance 4WD recommended on rainy days for the last 25 km of gravel on RP-J), organized tour with included transfer (USD 180-280), or combined with a Beagle Channel cruise from Ushuaia (some operators package this combo). The Estancia Harberton + Martillo Island excursion complements the standard Beagle Channel cruise (USD 65-110, 4 hours, no Martillo Island landing — penguins seen only at distance from the boat) — for the premium, photographically iconic experience, Harberton is the must-do.

The Acatushun Museum — One of a Kind
The Acatushun Museum (Yaghan for "where bones are gathered") was founded in 2001 by marine biologist Natalie Goodall (1935-2015), born in Ohio and married to Tomás Goodall (a direct descendant of Thomas Bridges). For 30 years Natalie collected naturally deceased animals on the beaches of Tierra del Fuego (none were hunted), performing autopsies and preparing mounts. The collection is considered the most complete southern marine-mammal collection in the world:
- 2,800 marine-mammal specimens: dolphins (at least 8 species), seals, sea lions, orcas, whales (including the full skeleton of a 7-meter minke whale).
- 2,300 seabird specimens: albatrosses, petrels, cormorants, gulls, penguins.
- Didactic halls explaining evolution, ecology and conservation.
- Active research: the museum continues Natalie's work with resident scientists.
Recognized by National Geographic as one of the most important scientific museums in South America.
