La Boca is the most colourful and football-mad neighbourhood in Buenos Aires, located on the southern bank of the Riachuelo river, 3 km from the city centre. Its most famous street, Caminito, is an open-air museum with tin houses painted in vibrant colours, couples dancing tango, artists selling paintings and an energy that distils porteno passion into a few blocks. Here too stands La Bombonera, the mythical stadium of Boca Juniors, one of the world's most popular football clubs.

La Boca was the neighbourhood of Genoese immigrants who arrived in Buenos Aires in the late 19th century. With leftover ship paint from the port, residents painted the facades of their tin and wood houses, creating the colour mosaic that is now a symbol of Buenos Aires. Artist Benito Quinquela Martin (1890-1977) immortalised the neighbourhood in his paintings and championed the creation of Caminito as an artistic space in 1959.
