Buenos Aires is one of the world's great nightlife capitals, a city where the evening starts when other cities have already gone to bed and stretches well into the morning. The porteno nightlife has multiple layers: from craft cocktail bars and speakeasies in Palermo to tango milongas where people dance until 04:00, mega-clubs on Costanera Norte with international DJs and underground bars in San Telmo.

Palermo bars: the porteno pre-game
Palermo Hollywood is the epicentre of the porteno previa (pre-game). The streets Honduras, Niceto Vega, Gorriti and Fitz Roy are packed with bars that fill up from midnight:
- Frank's Bar: Buenos Aires' most famous speakeasy, hidden behind a phone booth. Craft cocktails USD 8-12. Ring the bell and wait.
- Victoria Brown: classic cocktails in a 1920s setting. Cocktails USD 7-10.
- Uptown Bar: rooftop with Palermo views and creative cocktails. Ideal for starting the night.
- Cerveceria Nacional: Argentine craft beer in a relaxed setting. Pints USD 3-5.
Milongas: tango until dawn
Milongas are the dance halls where portenos dance real tango. Most offer a 1-hour beginner class before the social dancing starts:
- La Catedral: the most alternative milonga, in an Almagro warehouse. Class + milonga USD 3-5.
- La Viruta: in Palermo, three floors with tango, salsa and rock. Class included. USD 3-5.
- Salon Canning: elegant and traditional in Palermo. USD 5-8.

Tips for the porteno night
- Don't arrive early: bars fill up after midnight, clubs after 02:30.
- Cash: many bars and clubs prefer cash. Bring Argentine pesos.
- Taxi/Uber: always use taxi or Uber to get around at night. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas.
- Thursday: Thursday night is as good as Saturday in Buenos Aires.
- Dress code: Costanera clubs may have a dress code (no flip-flops, no shorts). Palermo bars are casual.
