Puerto Madero is Buenos Aires' youngest and most modern neighbourhood, a late-19th-century port transformed into a zone of skyscrapers, top-tier restaurants, luxury hotels and waterside promenades. The four old commercial docks -- whose construction began in 1887 and opened in stages between 1889 and 1898, based on Eduardo Madero's project -- became obsolete within years and were revitalised from the 1990s; today they house luxury lofts, corporate offices and one of the city's most exclusive dining scenes. It is the safest neighbourhood in Buenos Aires and the only one where you can walk at night in complete tranquillity.

Puente de la Mujer
The Puente de la Mujer, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and inaugurated in 2001, is Puerto Madero's icon. Its form evokes a tango couple: the 39-metre mast represents the male dancer and the bridge's curve his partner. The bridge rotates 90 degrees to allow boats to pass. Best time to visit: sunset. Free access 24/7.
Reserva Ecologica Costanera Sur
A surprise in the heart of Buenos Aires: 350 hectares of wetlands, lagoons and grasslands hosting over 340 bird species. Born by chance when demolition rubble deposited on the river was transformed by nature into a unique ecosystem. Free admission, open daily 8:00-18:00 (19:00 in summer). Three main trails: 30 minutes to 3 hours.
