Cerro San Bernardo is the most iconic natural viewpoint in the city of Salta, Argentina, rising to 1,454 meters above sea level on the eastern edge of the historic center (lat -24.7942, lng -65.3977). Access is by cable car from Parque San Martin (an 8-minute ride, 1,030 m in length) or by climbing the famous 1,070-step staircase carved into the western slope, a 45-60 minute ascent with intermediate viewpoints. At the summit you will find gardens with artificial waterfalls, a 360-degree panoramic terrace overlooking the entire city and the Lerma Valley, and a cafe. The hill takes its name from the patron saint of mountaineers and was declared a public promenade in 1938. It is the ideal starting point before exploring the Quebrada de las Conchas, Cuesta del Obispo or the Quebrada de Humahuaca. The average year-round temperature in Salta is 16.4 degrees Celsius, with dry winters ideal for hiking.

How to Get There
The hill is located in the heart of Salta city, just 10 blocks from Plaza 9 de Julio. There are two main ways to reach the summit.
By Cable Car
The cable car departs from the base station in Parque San Martin (Av. Hipolito Yrigoyen). The ride takes 8 minutes and covers 1,030 meters with a 290-meter elevation gain. Cabins hold 4 people and offer spectacular views during the ascent. It operates daily from 10:00 to 18:30 (extended hours in peak season). Price: approx. USD 5-8 round trip. We recommend going up by cable car and walking down the staircase (or vice versa).
By Staircase
The 1,070-step staircase begins behind the Guemes Monument, at the foot of the western slope. The climb takes 45-60 minutes at a moderate pace. There are benches and intermediate viewpoints to rest. It is a moderate physical activity; bring water and sunscreen. Many locals use it as their morning exercise. The best time to climb is early morning (less heat, better light for photos) or at sunset.
By Vehicle
There is a road that goes up the eastern slope (accessed from Av. Ejercito del Norte), but it is restricted and not always open. The cable car or staircase are the most practical options.
What to See and Do
Panoramic Viewpoint
The summit terrace offers a 360-degree view encompassing the entire city of Salta, the Lerma Valley, surrounding mountain ranges and, on clear days, snow-capped peaks to the west. It is the best spot to photograph Salta's colonial grid and churches. At sunset, the city lights up progressively creating an unforgettable scene. There are public telescopes and information panels identifying visible landmarks.
Gardens and Waterfalls
At the summit you will find well-maintained gardens with native and subtropical vegetation, walking paths and a series of tiered artificial waterfalls cascading down the slope. It is a quiet green space, ideal for resting after the climb. There are benches, shade and a cafe where you can get cold or hot drinks.
Staircase as a Sport
Climbing the 1,070 steps is an experience in itself. Each section offers a different perspective of the city. Midway up there is a Christ Redeemer statue and side viewpoints. Many local runners and athletes climb it daily. It is common to see training groups at sunrise. The staircase is lit and safe during the day.
Parque San Martin
At the base of the hill, Parque San Martin is Salta's green lung: 7 hectares with trails, a lake with boats, playgrounds, weekend craft fairs and the cable car base station. Combining the park with the hill climb makes for an ideal half-day outing for families.
When to Visit
- Fall (March-May): Pleasant temperatures (15-25°C), clear skies, ideal for climbing without excessive heat. Low humidity.
- Winter (June-August): Sunny and dry days, cold nights. Excellent visibility from the viewpoint. Peak season in July.
- Spring (September-November): Lapacho trees bloom in Parque San Martin. Rising temperatures. Good season.
- Summer (December-February): Intense heat (30-38°C), frequent afternoon rain. Climb early morning or at sunset. Rain can close the cable car.
