Iguazu Falls Under the Full Moon

Devil's Throat illuminated by moonlight, lunar rainbows and the roar of water in the darkness. A mystical experience.

Last updated: April 2026

If Iguazu Falls by day is a supernatural spectacle, under the full moon it becomes something truly magical. The Full Moon Walk is an exclusive experience that allows you to walk the 1,100-metre walkway to Devil's Throat at night, illuminated only by the silver light of the moon. The roar of water in the darkness, the mist glowing like a phantom and, when conditions are perfect, the appearance of a lunar rainbow (moonbow) -- these create an experience that many travellers describe as the most memorable of their lives.

The walk takes place only during the 5 nights around each full moon and spots are very limited, making it one of the most exclusive and sought-after experiences in all of Argentina.

Full Moon Walk Facts

  • Frequency: 5 nights per month (around the full moon)
  • Price: ~USD 40-55 per person
  • Duration: ~2 hours
  • Meeting point: National Park entrance
  • Includes: Night train + guided walk + refreshments
  • Maximum capacity: ~100-150 people per night
  • Advance booking: Required (2-3 weeks ahead)

The Night Experience

The programme begins at the Visitor Centre, where the group gathers at dusk. A guide explains the peculiarities of the nocturnal ecosystem while darkness envelops the jungle. Then the group boards the Ecological Train, which moves slowly through the jungle in darkness -- an experience in itself: you hear the night sounds of the forest, crickets, frogs, a distant owl.

Upon arriving at the Garganta del Diablo Station, the 1,100-metre walkway begins. The moon illuminates the river like a silver mirror and the jungle casts dramatic shadows. As you approach the Throat, the roar grows in the darkness, much more intense and enveloping than during the day, because sound behaves differently without the daytime crowds and bustle.

The climax is reaching the Devil's Throat viewpoint under the full moon. The cascade is a silver curtain disappearing into an abyss of luminous mist. If the moon is at the right angle and the mist has the right density, the legendary lunar rainbow forms: an arc of faint but visible colours against the night sky. It is a rare optical phenomenon that very few places in the world can offer.

Booking tip: Spots sell out quickly. Check the 2026 full moon dates and book at least 2-3 weeks in advance. If your trip coincides with the full moon, this experience should be your number one priority.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can you do the full moon walk at Iguazu?

The walk takes place during the 5 nights around each full moon (2 before, the full moon night, and 2 after). Exact dates are published in advance on the official park website. Booking at least 2-3 weeks ahead is recommended as spots are limited.

How much does the full moon walk cost?

The night walk costs approximately USD 40-55 per person (in addition to park entry). It includes the guided tour, the night walk along the walkway to Devil's Throat, and a light dinner or refreshments depending on the programme.

Is the night walk safe?

Yes, it is completely safe. The walk is done in guided groups with park staff. The walkway has safety railings and is lit with dim lights that do not interfere with the moon experience. Guides are positioned at the front and rear of the group at all times.

What if it is cloudy or raining?

If the sky is completely overcast and the moon is not visible, the walk may be cancelled with rescheduling offered. With partial cloud cover, the walk goes ahead (clouds drifting across the moon create dramatic effects). In heavy rain, it is cancelled with a refund option.
