One of the most common questions is when to visit Iguazu Falls. The answer depends on your priority: maximum water volume, pleasant weather or fewer crowds. Iguazu can be visited year-round, but each season offers a different experience.
Seasons of the Year
Summer (December - March): Maximum volume
Subtropical rains feed the Iguazu River and the falls reach their peak power. Flow can exceed 10,000 m3/s (vs the 1,746 m3/s average), creating a colossal spectacle. But the heat is brutal: 35-40 C with 80-90% humidity. It is high season due to school holidays.
Autumn (April - June): The best time
Considered the ideal period. The rains ease but flow remains high from summer inertia. Temperatures drop to a pleasant 18-28 C. Fewer tourists than summer. April and May are particularly good: strong flow, perfect weather and affordable prices.
Winter (July - August): Dry season
Cool temperatures of 12-22 C, ideal for walking without exhaustion. Flow is lower but the falls remain impressive. July is high season due to Argentine and Brazilian winter holidays. August is quieter.
Spring (September - November): Perfect balance
Flow starts rising with the first spring rains. Pleasant temperatures of 20-30 C. Few tourists in September-October. November can be hot. October is an excellent month: rising flow, comfortable weather and few people.
High Season vs Low Season
- High season: Easter, July (winter holidays), January-February, Argentine and Brazilian long weekends
- Low season: May-June, August-September, first half of December
Our recommendation: If you can choose, travel in April, May or October. You get the best balance of water volume, weather and crowd levels. Avoid Easter and the second half of July unless you book well in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the water volume highest at the falls?
The greatest volume occurs between December and March (rainy season). The falls are spectacularly powerful during this period, but the heat is oppressive (35-40 C with very high humidity). Average flow is 1,746 m3/s but during floods it can exceed 10,000 m3/s.
When are there the fewest tourists?
Low season runs May to June and August to September (excluding Easter and winter holidays). During these months there are shorter queues, lower prices and pleasant temperatures of 15-25 C. The volume is lower but the falls remain spectacular.
Can you visit the falls in the rain?
Yes. The falls do not close for rain (only for severe electrical storms). In fact, after heavy rain the falls are even more impressive. Bring a rain poncho and footwear with good grip.
