Famatina is a small village of about 3,500 inhabitants in the province of La Rioja, located 30 kilometers northwest of Chilecito (1 hour by car on RP 11), at the foot of the majestic Cerro Famatina (6,250 meters above sea level — sixth-highest peak in Argentina and one of the seven coveted "six-thousanders" for mountaineers). High on the mountain, at 4,600 meters, lies the legendary La Mejicana mine — a polymetallic gold, silver, copper and zinc deposit worked intensively from the late 19th to early 20th century (1903-1929) by the Anglo-Argentina Famatina Company with British and German capital — today declared a National Historic Monument with ruins of mining camps, abandoned industrial installations, rusted extraction equipment, worker housing, and the famous Chilecito-La Mejicana Cable Carril of 35 kilometers with 9 stations, built in 1905 and imported from Germany to transport ore from the mine (4,600 m) to Chilecito (1,080 m) bridging a 3,520-meter drop — one of South America's engineering marvels, one of the longest industrial cableways in the world at its time and the reason Chilecito experienced a brief economic boom in the early 20th century. The mine closed in 1929 due to the combination of seam exhaustion, the Great Depression and extreme logistical costs. Today it is one of the most spectacular 4x4 adventure destinations in northwestern Argentina: the classic tour is a 10-12 hour full day in 4x4 from Chilecito or Famatina village: early start 7-8am, ascent on a narrow dirt cliff road with hairpins and precipices (not suitable for those with vertigo or severe cardiovascular conditions), 4-5 hours uphill with photographic stops at intermediate viewpoints and at some Cable Carril stations, arrival at La Mejicana at 4,600 meters with 1-2 hours to walk through the mining ruins, lunch at stone shelter included, 3-4 hour descent, return to Chilecito at sunset. Recommended certified operators: Corona del Inca, Salir del Cráter, Wayra Aventura, Sierra de Famatina Tours and Famatina Aventura 4x4. Prices USD 80-180 per person depending on operator (includes 4x4 with expert driver, guide, lunch, water, emergency oxygen, basic equipment). Risks to consider: altitude sickness (apunamiento) is real from approximately 3,500 meters — symptoms: headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, breathing difficulty. Prevention: intense hydration (3+ liters of water/day during the previous day and the day of the tour), no alcohol the night before, light meals (no heavy asado the day before), chew coca leaves or drink coca tea (legal and traditional in the area, helps with altitude), preventive paracetamol/ibuprofen. Contraindicated for severe cardiovascular conditions, uncontrolled hypertension, severe COPD, pregnancy. Recommended minimum age: 12 years. Always wear layered clothing including a serious coat (in Famatina village at 1,500 m it may be 25°C during the day and at 4,600 m 0°C with 60 km/h winds, -10°C wind chill), mandatory SPF 50+ sunscreen (extreme UV at altitude), hat and gloves, sunglasses, minimum 3 liters of water, energy snacks. How to get there: from La Rioja capital 200 km northwest via RN 38 (3-4 h paved to Chilecito) or from San Juan capital 320 km / 5 h via RN 40. Flights: daily flights to La Rioja capital from Buenos Aires (AEP-IRJ, 1h45) or to San Juan (1h50), then rented car or transfer. The operational season is March-November with optimal April-June (mild autumn with clear skies) and September-November (spring); avoid summer (summer rains cut roads) and winter (possibility of snow temporarily closes operations). Combinable in itinerary with Talampaya (UNESCO Heritage, red canyons, 2-3 days from La Rioja) and Valle de la Luna (Ischigualasto) in San Juan for a complete 5-7 day plan with USD 800-1,500 per person including tours + lodging.

The Cable Carril — Engineering Marvel
The Chilecito-La Mejicana Cable Carril was built between 1903 and 1905 by the German company Adolf Bleichert & Co., one of the world's most respected aerial transport firms. The line was 35 kilometers long with 9 intermediate stations for maintenance and connections: Station 1 (Chilecito), Station 2 (Aerocarril), Stations 3-8 (intermediate), Station 9 (La Mejicana). Each station had permanent operators in charge of switching wagons to the corresponding cable, lubricating the system and reporting incidents by phone.
The system carried 1-ton ore wagons in both directions: hauling supplies, tools and workers up to the mine, and gold/silver ore down to Chilecito to be shipped by rail to Buenos Aires and from there to Europe. Capacity: 30 tons/hour in each direction. It operated 24 hours a day for 24 years (1905-1929) until the mine closed due to seam exhaustion + 1929 crisis + logistical costs.
Today the 9 stations are preserved in varying states. Most visitable: Stations 1 and 2 in Chilecito (museum + guided visits, USD 3-5), Station 9 La Mejicana (included in 4x4 tour). The intermediate ones are seen from the 4x4 route. One of the most striking industrial-historical experiences in Argentina.
