Villa Union is a town of 7,000 inhabitants (2022 census) in the Coronel Felipe Varela department of La Rioja province, located at 1,240 meters above sea level in the Bermejo Valley, between the Famatina Mountains to the east and the Andes to the west, crossed by the Bermejo River and National Route 40. Founded in 1818 by Facundo Quiroga, originally a frontier fort against indigenous raids and a center for ranching during the 19th century. Today it is the essential base to visit Talampaya National Park (UNESCO since 2000, only 55 km north on paved RN 76, 1 hour), the nearest town with full hotel infrastructure within the Talampaya-Ischigualasto circuit, and the access point to Laguna Brava (4,270m, Ramsar Site 150 km west, Andean flamingo reserve), Pircas Negras Pass (4,164m, Argentina-Chile/Copiapó border, open October-May) and San Guillermo National Park (UNESCO biosphere shared with San Juan, vicuñas and guanacos). To the east, the Cuesta de Miranda (17 km, 800 curves, 2,040m) connects Villa Union with Chilecito on one of the most scenic stretches of Argentina's RN 40. To the south, RN 150 leads to Valle de la Luna/Ischigualasto (85 km, sister park to Talampaya) allowing the complete "Triassic Circuit" in 2 days. Villa Union offers 12 hotels, 15 restaurants serving regional cuisine (asado-roasted goat, riojana empanadas, locro, humita, desserts with chañar syrup), YPF and Shell gas stations, Banco Nación and Banco Macro ATMs (frequent failures — bring cash), pharmacy, mini-markets. Access from La Rioja capital (250 km, 3h30) with daily Cata and Dif 25 buses, from Chilecito (175 km via Cuesta de Miranda, 3 h) and from San Juan capital (230 km, 3 h). No airport; the closest is La Rioja IRJ (250 km) with daily flights to Buenos Aires. Villa Union has 95,000 annual visitors, concentrated during Easter Week (30% of flow), winter holidays (25%) and long weekends. Climate is arid continental: very hot summers (35-42°C, afternoon showers January-March), dry winters with cold nights (-5/+15°C), ideal springs and autumns. The local population is welcoming with strong identity: the Goat Festival is celebrated in April, the La Rioja Wine Harvest in February.
