Talampaya National Park

UNESCO since 2000 — 150 m canyon, Triassic formations, 3,000-year-old petroglyphs and Andean condors

Last updated: April 2026

Talampaya National Park is a 215,000-hectare conservation unit in the Coronel Felipe Varela department of La Rioja province, in western Argentina, declared a UNESCO Natural and Cultural World Heritage Site in December 2000 together with Ischigualasto Provincial Park (San Juan, known as "Valle de la Luna"). Both parks were jointly inscribed because they preserve a continuous and complete paleontological record of the entire Triassic era (245-200 million years before present), a critical period in biological history when the first mammals, the first dinosaurs (Eoraptor lunensis, discovered at Ischigualasto in 1993 and considered one of the world's oldest at 230 million years) and the first gymnosperms and cycads emerged. The park's most striking visual feature is the Talampaya Canyon, a giant 20-km-long, 150-meter-tall slot canyon between 80 and 800 meters wide, eroded by the Talampaya River over millions of years through Cretaceous sediments of red clays, sandstones and conglomerates that produce the characteristic ochre, red, orange and purple colors. Inside the canyon, eolian erosion over the last 200,000 years has sculpted monumental rock formations with evocative names: The Gothic Cathedral (an 80m wall with niches and pinnacles reminiscent of European cathedrals), The Monk (an isolated 50m formation shaped like a hooded human figure), The Tower, The Chess Board (square patterns), The Balconies, The Chimney and The Wise Man. The park also protects pre-Columbian petroglyphs carved 2,000-3,000 years ago by the Ciénaga and Aguada peoples, depicting stylized human figures, llamas, snakes and astronomical symbols; the natural Botanical Garden at the bottom of the canyon with typical arid-gorge vegetation (carob, mistol, chañar, chilcas, cardons) that survives thanks to the moisture retained by the rocky walls; and fauna such as Andean condors (abundant, often gliding low over the canyon at midday), guanacos, lesser rheas, maras ("Patagonian hares"), red foxes and pumas (rarely seen). Canyon access is mandatorily guided in 4x4 combi vans operated by the concessionaire Talampaya S.A., with capacity for 30-40 passengers and three available circuits: the Talampaya Canyon Circuit (the classic, 2h30, 4 stops with short walks), the Lost City Circuit (3h30, erosive formations outside the main canyon) and the Don Eduardo Gorge Circuit (2h, ideal at sunset). Park entry is affordable (ARS 5,000, ~USD 5 in 2026) but circuits are charged separately (USD 18-35). Access from Villa Union (55 km south on paved RN 76, 1 hour), the base town with hotels. The park is open 8:00-17:00 in summer (last entry 16:30) and 8:30-16:30 in winter. It receives about 85,000 visitors per year, concentrated during Easter Week, winter holidays and long weekends.

The 3 Circuits of Talampaya

Talampaya Canyon Circuit (the classic)

Duration: 2h30. Difficulty: low (short walks of 200-500m between stops). Tours the heart of the main canyon in a guided combi van with 4 stops with short walks on compacted sand:

  1. The Petroglyphs (km 4): rock engravings on the canyon walls with anthropomorphic figures, llamas, snakes and astronomical symbols, 2,000-3,000 years old. No touching allowed.
  2. Botanical Garden (km 6): narrow canyon section where the more humid environment supports dense vegetation of carob, mistol, chañar and cardons. Amazing acoustics — there's a "talking wall" that returns amplified echoes.
  3. The Gothic Cathedral (km 9): monumental 80m rock formation with niches, pinnacles and buttresses similar to a European cathedral. The most photographed stop.
  4. The Monk (km 12): an isolated 53m tower shaped like a hooded human figure, sculpted by the wind. Turnaround point of the classic circuit.

Lost City Circuit

Duration: 3h30. Difficulty: medium. Access to the Triassic Canyon and its erosive formations called "Lost City" (Cerro del Fuerte) that look like wind-carved urban structures. Less touristy, more solitary. Best for those who already did the classic canyon.

Don Eduardo Gorge Circuit

Duration: 2h. A smaller side gorge but with spectacular sunset light. Ideal as a second circuit on the same day (canyon in the morning, Don Eduardo in the afternoon).

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to enter Talampaya National Park?

Park entry costs ARS 5,000 (~USD 5) in 2026 for all visitors. Seniors and people with disabilities enter free (with ID). Guided circuits are charged separately: Talampaya Canyon Circuit (2h30, the most popular) USD 18-25; Lost City Circuit (3h30) USD 28-35; Don Eduardo Gorge Circuit (2h) USD 20. The classic circuit is mandatorily guided — you cannot enter the canyon without a guide.

How do I get to Talampaya?

The park entrance is 55 km north of Villa Union (La Rioja) on paved RN 76. From Villa Union by car: 1 hour. There is no direct public transportation to the park. Options: rent a car in La Rioja capital (250 km to the park, 3h30), organized excursion from Villa Union (USD 45-65), 2-day excursion from La Rioja combined with Ischigualasto (USD 220-280). Official entrance: Talampaya Canyon Service Area (km 144 of RN 76).

What is the best Talampaya circuit?

The Talampaya Canyon Circuit (classic) is essential: 2h30 in a guided combi van, 4 stops with short walks — The Petroglyphs (3,000-year-old rock art), natural Botanical Garden (gorge vegetation), Gothic Cathedral (monumental rock formation 80m), The Monk (a solitary wind-carved figure). If you have more time: add the Lost City (3h30, less touristy, erosive formations) or Don Eduardo Gorge (sunset).

When is the best time to visit Talampaya?

April-June and September-November are optimal: mild weather (20-28°C day, 5-12°C night), clear skies, little rain. Avoid December-March: summer with 40-45°C midday temperatures (the canyon intensifies the heat) and afternoon thunderstorms that may close the park. Winter (July-August) is dry, cold but sunny with great photo light. The best times of day are sunrise (6:30-9:00) and sunset (17:00-19:00) for the light on the red walls.

Can Talampaya be combined with Ischigualasto?

Yes — it's the most popular combination ("Triassic Circuit" UNESCO). Talampaya (La Rioja) and Ischigualasto/Valle de la Luna (San Juan) are adjacent parks jointly declared UNESCO World Heritage in 2000 because together they preserve the entire Triassic era. It's done in 2 days from Villa Union (which sits midway): day 1 Talampaya, day 2 Ischigualasto (1h45 by car). Combined excursions USD 180-280.

What can I see in Talampaya?

Triassic geological formations: 150m-tall canyon with red-clay walls; wind-carved formations such as the Gothic Cathedral, The Monk, The Tower, Chess Board, The Balconies; petroglyphs (rock art with human and animal figures from 2,000-3,000 years ago); the Botanical Garden with gorge vegetation (carob, mistol, chilcas); fauna such as guanacos, lesser rheas, Andean condors, maras; and the fossils (in the park museum) of primitive dinosaurs such as Eoraptor lunensis and Frenguellisaurus (now Herrerasaurus).

Where to sleep near Talampaya?

Villa Union (55 km south) has the best lodging: Hotel Pircas Negras (top in town, USD 90-130), Hotel Cañón de Talampaya (USD 75-110), Posada de Rosa (USD 55-80), family inns USD 35-60. Inside the park there is an official campsite (paid, USD 8/person with water and bathrooms). Pagancillo (28 km east) has cheaper rural inns. In high season (Easter Week, July) book 2 months ahead.

What to bring to Talampaya?

Plenty of water (3L/person minimum, no shops inside the canyon), SPF 50+ sunscreen, brimmed hat, sunglasses, comfortable closed shoes (short walks on sand and stone), layered clothing (cold mornings, hot midday), camera with telephoto lens (condors are common), binoculars. Cash: limited shop in the park. The combi circuit doesn't allow getting off outside the 4 official stops — please respect the rules.
