Mendoza city is the capital of the homonymous province, located at the foot of the Andes in central-western Argentina (lat -32.8895, lng -68.8458, 750 m a.s.l.). With over 1 million people in its metropolitan area, it is Argentina's fourth-largest city and the gateway to South America's most important wine region. Plaza Independencia (1.6 hectares) is the civic and cultural heart. Parque General San Martin, designed by Carlos Thays in 1896, spans 307 hectares. The Area Fundacional preserves remains of the colonial city destroyed by the 1861 earthquake. Aristides Villanueva street is the epicenter of Mendoza nightlife. The tree-lined acequias (open irrigation channels) bordering every street are a unique century-old system that turns Mendoza into a green oasis in the desert.

By Bus
Buses from Buenos Aires (12-14 hours, from USD 30), Cordoba (10 hours), Santiago de Chile (6-7 hours via Los Libertadores pass).

Plaza Independencia
Mendoza's heart: 1.6 hectares of green spaces, fountains and the underground Municipal Museum of Modern Art. Weekend craft fair with 100+ stalls. The four satellite plazas form a unique five-plaza grid.
Parque General San Martin
One of South America's largest urban parks: 307 hectares with 50,000+ trees of 300 species. Highlights: Cerro de la Gloria (monument with panoramic views), artificial lake with boats, rose garden.
Area Fundacional
The site where colonial Mendoza was founded in 1561, destroyed by the 1861 earthquake. The museum displays archaeological remains under glass floors. USD 2-3.
Aristides Villanueva Street
20 blocks of bars, restaurants, craft breweries and nightclubs. The epicenter of Mendoza social life. Many venues offer happy hour until 21:00. Dinner with wine: USD 8-15.
The Acequias
Mendoza's unique open irrigation channels border every street, feeding the trees that provide shade. This century-old system, inherited from Huarpe and Inca engineering, makes the sidewalks into tree-lined promenades.
When to Visit
- Autumn (March-May): Best time. Harvest festival in March (Fiesta de la Vendimia). Golden foliage.
- Winter (June-August): Dry cold, ideal for combining city + skiing.
- Spring (September-November): Blooming, warming temperatures. Wineries open, Andes still snow-capped.
- Summer (December-February): Intense heat (35-40°C). Enjoyable nights on Aristides Villanueva.
