Symbol of peace at 3,834 m — Monument on the Andean border pass

Last updated: April 2026

The Cristo Redentor de los Andes is a 7-meter bronze monument at 3,834 meters on the old border pass between Argentina and Chile (lat -32.8167, lng -70.0667). Inaugurated March 13, 1904, it was erected as a symbol of peace after both countries peacefully resolved a border conflict. The sculpture was cast from melted war cannons. The inscription reads: "Sooner shall these mountains crumble than Argentines and Chileans break the peace sworn at the feet of Christ the Redeemer." Access is open only in summer (November-April) when snow permits.
