Ruca Malen is the boutique winery responsible for the single most-recommended dining experience in Mendoza wine country: a five-course paired lunch where every dish on the menu is conceived from scratch to match a specific wine in the cellar. Founded in 1999 by Jean Pierre Thibaud (former Chandon Argentina president) and Jacques Louis de Montalembert, the winery sits in Agrelo, Lujan de Cuyo, 28 km south of Mendoza city. The Mapuche name means "house of the young woman," chosen as a tribute to the indigenous heritage of southern Argentina. The estate is small by Mendoza standards (200 hectares between Agrelo and Valle de Uco) but the food-and-wine concept has earned international press in Wine Spectator, Decanter and Conde Nast Traveler. The dining room sits behind a floor-to-ceiling window framing the Cordillera de los Andes — the view is the reason most photos of Mendoza wine country end up taken from this exact spot.
Why visit Ruca Malen
Most winery restaurants in Mendoza pair an existing dish with a wine after the fact. Ruca Malen does the opposite: the chef and the head winemaker design each course around a specific bottle. The result is a sequence of dishes that genuinely showcase what a particular wine does, rather than a meal where the wine is an afterthought. The five-course progression typically runs from a sparkling-and-amuse-bouche opener through a fish-and-Chardonnay or Pinot Noir course, a poultry-and-Cabernet Franc course, the headline beef-and-Malbec pairing, and ends with a dessert-and-late-harvest-or-fortified course.
The other reason to come is intimacy. Ruca Malen receives 30-50 lunch guests per day rather than the 200-300 of a flagship like Catena Zapata or Zuccardi. Every meal feels personal, the sommelier comes to your table to talk through each pairing, and you can usually meet the chef during the meal. For travelers who have already done the iconic estate visits and want something quieter, this is the right next stop.
The wines
Yauquen (entry)
The everyday range — Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay. USD 12-20. Bright, fresh, designed to introduce the Ruca Malen style without serious oak.
Terroir (premium)
Single-block selections from Agrelo (Lujan de Cuyo) and Valle de Uco. Terroir Malbec, Terroir Cabernet Franc. USD 25-40. The bridge into the icon range and the wines most often poured at lunch.
Kinien (icon blend)
The flagship Bordeaux-style blend, Malbec-led with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Made only in vintages that meet a strict quality threshold. USD 60-100. Wine Spectator 92-94. Built for 8-15 years of cellaring.
Aimee (boutique)
A limited-production single-vineyard Malbec named after one of the founders\' daughters. USD 50-80. Smaller production than Kinien, often allocated only to the on-site shop and the lunch program.

How to get there
Ruca Malen is on RN 7 at km 1059 in Agrelo, 28 km south of Mendoza city. The drive is 30 minutes south on RN 7 — straightforward and one of the shortest of any premium winery in the region. Three options:
- Self-drive: rental cars from the airport USD 55-80/day, free parking on site. Realistic only if you skip the wine pairing — the five-course lunch is not compatible with driving home.
- Uber or remis: one-way Uber USD 22-32; remis round-trip with a 4-hour wait USD 60-90. Ride-share is reliable on this route given the proximity to the city.
- Wine tour with transfer: the smartest option for the lunch. Operators like Mendoza Wine Tours, Ampora Wine Tours and Trout & Wine include Ruca Malen in their classic Lujan de Cuyo lunch circuits (USD 180-260 per person, 1-2 wineries plus the lunch).
From Lujan de Cuyo town the drive is 10 minutes; from Maipu 25 minutes. See the getting-there guide.
Best time to visit
Harvest (March-April) is the marquee season — the chef\'s menu rotates seasonally and harvest brings local produce at its peak. Spring (October-November) opens the outdoor terrace dining and the Andes still hold snow against the wide Lujan de Cuyo sky. Summer (December-February) is hot but the dining room is air-conditioned and outdoor seating moves into shaded areas. Winter (June-August) is the underrated choice — fewer crowds, the seasonal menu shifts to braises and game, and the fireplace in the dining room runs daily. Closed Sundays.
Where to eat nearby
Ruca Malen\'s lunch is the main event, but if you also want dinner in the area:
- Casa Vigil (El Enemigo) — chef-driven Argentine by Alejandro Vigil (ex-Catena head winemaker), 10 minutes away. USD 80-120 with wine. Book 3-4 weeks ahead.
- La Vid at Bodega Norton — relaxed Argentine, easier to book than most winery restaurants. USD 30-60 with wine.
- Siete Cocinas (Vista Flores) — chef Pablo del Rio\'s seven-region tasting menu, 45 minutes south. USD 90-130.
Where to stay
The smartest base for a Ruca Malen-focused itinerary is Lujan de Cuyo or Chacras de Coria. Top winery hotels include Cavas Wine Lodge (Relais & Chateaux, USD 550-900), Entre Cielos (USD 380-680), Club Tapiz (USD 220-380) and Posada Borravino (USD 180-280).
