Ruca Malen winery dining room with Andes view in Agrelo, Lujan de Cuyo

Ruca Malen

The most-loved wine-paired lunch in Mendoza. Five courses, five wines, Andes views — the unmissable gastronomic experience of Lujan de Cuyo.

Last updated: April 2026

Ruca Malen is the boutique winery responsible for the single most-recommended dining experience in Mendoza wine country: a five-course paired lunch where every dish on the menu is conceived from scratch to match a specific wine in the cellar. Founded in 1999 by Jean Pierre Thibaud (former Chandon Argentina president) and Jacques Louis de Montalembert, the winery sits in Agrelo, Lujan de Cuyo, 28 km south of Mendoza city. The Mapuche name means "house of the young woman," chosen as a tribute to the indigenous heritage of southern Argentina. The estate is small by Mendoza standards (200 hectares between Agrelo and Valle de Uco) but the food-and-wine concept has earned international press in Wine Spectator, Decanter and Conde Nast Traveler. The dining room sits behind a floor-to-ceiling window framing the Cordillera de los Andes — the view is the reason most photos of Mendoza wine country end up taken from this exact spot.

Why visit Ruca Malen

Most winery restaurants in Mendoza pair an existing dish with a wine after the fact. Ruca Malen does the opposite: the chef and the head winemaker design each course around a specific bottle. The result is a sequence of dishes that genuinely showcase what a particular wine does, rather than a meal where the wine is an afterthought. The five-course progression typically runs from a sparkling-and-amuse-bouche opener through a fish-and-Chardonnay or Pinot Noir course, a poultry-and-Cabernet Franc course, the headline beef-and-Malbec pairing, and ends with a dessert-and-late-harvest-or-fortified course.

The other reason to come is intimacy. Ruca Malen receives 30-50 lunch guests per day rather than the 200-300 of a flagship like Catena Zapata or Zuccardi. Every meal feels personal, the sommelier comes to your table to talk through each pairing, and you can usually meet the chef during the meal. For travelers who have already done the iconic estate visits and want something quieter, this is the right next stop.

The wines

Yauquen (entry)

The everyday range — Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay. USD 12-20. Bright, fresh, designed to introduce the Ruca Malen style without serious oak.

Terroir (premium)

Single-block selections from Agrelo (Lujan de Cuyo) and Valle de Uco. Terroir Malbec, Terroir Cabernet Franc. USD 25-40. The bridge into the icon range and the wines most often poured at lunch.

Kinien (icon blend)

The flagship Bordeaux-style blend, Malbec-led with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Made only in vintages that meet a strict quality threshold. USD 60-100. Wine Spectator 92-94. Built for 8-15 years of cellaring.

Aimee (boutique)

A limited-production single-vineyard Malbec named after one of the founders\' daughters. USD 50-80. Smaller production than Kinien, often allocated only to the on-site shop and the lunch program.

How to get there

Ruca Malen is on RN 7 at km 1059 in Agrelo, 28 km south of Mendoza city. The drive is 30 minutes south on RN 7 — straightforward and one of the shortest of any premium winery in the region. Three options:

From Lujan de Cuyo town the drive is 10 minutes; from Maipu 25 minutes. See the getting-there guide.

Best time to visit

Harvest (March-April) is the marquee season — the chef\'s menu rotates seasonally and harvest brings local produce at its peak. Spring (October-November) opens the outdoor terrace dining and the Andes still hold snow against the wide Lujan de Cuyo sky. Summer (December-February) is hot but the dining room is air-conditioned and outdoor seating moves into shaded areas. Winter (June-August) is the underrated choice — fewer crowds, the seasonal menu shifts to braises and game, and the fireplace in the dining room runs daily. Closed Sundays.

The smartest base for a Ruca Malen-focused itinerary is Lujan de Cuyo or Chacras de Coria. Frequently asked questions

Do I need to book Ruca Malen in advance?

Reservations are mandatory, especially for the lunch — book 4-8 weeks ahead and longer in high season (November-April). The standard tasting can be booked 1-2 weeks ahead. Reserve via rucamalen.com or through approved tour operators.

How much does Ruca Malen cost in 2026?

The five-course paired lunch with five wines runs USD 80-130 per person — the headline experience. Standard tour-and-tasting is USD 25-40 (1 hour, four wines). Premium tasting with Kinien icon blend is USD 50-70. The lunch is the reason most travelers book Ruca Malen. Prices verified April 2026.

Can I drive after lunch at Ruca Malen?

Strongly discouraged — the five-course paired lunch means five glasses of wine over 2-3 hours, and Argentina's 0.5 g/L blood-alcohol limit is enforced with checkpoints on RN 40 on weekend afternoons. Use a private remis (USD 60-90 round-trip from Mendoza), book a wine tour with included transfer, or take an Uber both ways.

What is the difference between Lujan de Cuyo and Valle de Uco?

Ruca Malen is in Lujan de Cuyo, the historic heart of Mendoza wine, 28 km south of the city at 1,000 m. It works as a half-day with one or two wineries plus the long lunch. Valle de Uco is 90-120 km south at 1,100-1,500 m, a full-day commitment with longer drives between estates.

Is English spoken at Ruca Malen?

Yes — guides are bilingual Spanish/English and the dining-room staff speak fluent English. French is also handled given the winery's Franco-Argentine ownership. Request the English experience at booking.

Are kids allowed at Ruca Malen?

Children are welcome at lunch — the kitchen offers an off-menu plate for younger guests on request. The lunch is a slow, three-hour seated experience that works best for kids 10+. Tasting flights are 18+ only.

What does Ruca Malen mean?

"Ruca Malen" means "house of the young woman" in Mapuche, the indigenous language of southern Argentina. The name reflects the founders' (Jean Pierre Thibaud and Jacques Louis de Montalembert) decision to honor the local cultural heritage when they founded the winery in 1999.

What should I wear?

Smart casual is appropriate for the lunch — the dining room is more refined than most winery restaurants. Closed shoes for the cellar tour. From November to March bring sunscreen and a hat for the outdoor terraces; in winter (June-August) a fleece for the unheated barrel hall.
