Puerto Pirámides is a small fishing and tourism village of 700 inhabitants on the south shore of the Valdés Peninsula, in Chubut province, facing Golfo Nuevo. It is the only town inside the UNESCO World Heritage Valdés Peninsula protected area (1999) and serves as the operational base for one of South America's most extraordinary marine wildlife shows: southern right whale watching (Eubalaena australis) every June through December, peaking in September-October when up to 2,000 whales gather in Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San José for breeding and calving. The species was nearly extinct from 19th-century commercial whaling — current global population is 5,500 with 30% breeding around the Valdés Peninsula. Boat trips depart from the Pirámides port (USD 80-120 for 1.5h) on authorized vessels by Chubut government regulations: Pirámides Aventura, Bottazzi, Hydro Sport, Whales Argentina. The boats follow strict 50-meter approach rules to protect whales, and the encounters are intimate — mothers with calves often surface within 20 meters. Beyond whales, Pirámides hosts a permanent sea lion colony at Las Cuevas (1.5 km walk from town), Argentina's most accessible snorkel-with-sea-lions experience (USD 130-180, no scuba certification needed), open-water scuba diving with year-round wildlife, dolphin watching (Commerson's and bottlenose dolphins frequent the bay), and the gateway to the full Valdés circuit including Punta Norte (orca attack site, March-April), Caleta Valdés, Isla de los Pájaros and Punta Delgada. The village has just 12-15 lodging options (small inns USD 80-180, boutique hotels USD 200-280, camping USD 12-20) — much smaller than nearby Puerto Madryn (80 km away, 100,000 inhabitants, full amenities). Many visitors day-trip from Madryn for whale watching but seasoned wildlife travelers prefer 2-3 nights in Pirámides for early-morning departures, calmer crowds and the surreal experience of waking up to whales breaching outside the bedroom window. The village has no banks (bring cash), limited grocery (stock up in Madryn), and unstable internet — a feature rather than a bug for a wildlife retreat. Restaurants serve fresh seafood (Patagonian shrimp, hake, octopus, sea bass) and the local Patagonian lamb. The Patagonian sky here is exceptional — far from city lights, ideal for stargazing.

The Whale-Watching Experience
Step by step:

- Boarding: arrive 30 min before departure. Lifejackets provided. Boats hold 30-50 people with seat options below or open deck.
- Sailing out: 10-15 minutes from port to the whale zone in Golfo Nuevo. Speed is moderate to comply with regulations.

- Return: 15-20 min back to port. Hot drinks served on board.
Beyond Whales — Other Wildlife
- Sea lion colony Las Cuevas: 1.5 km walk from Pirámides center. Free viewing platform. ~200 sea lions (Otaria flavescens) year-round, peak November (pups born). Loud and smelly but spectacular.
- Snorkel with sea lions: the Pirámides specialty. 2-hour boat ride to a designated bay where young sea lions play with snorkelers. Wetsuits, masks, fins included. No swimming experience needed.
- Bottlenose and Commerson\'s dolphins: frequent the bay all year. Often visible from shore.
- Magellanic penguins: Punta Tombo (195 km south) hosts South America\'s largest colony (~500,000 birds, September-March).
- Orcas (killer whales): the famous Punta Norte attack technique (March-April) where orcas beach themselves to catch sea lion pups. Tours USD 200-300 from Pirámides.
- Land fauna: guanaco, mara (Patagonian hare), gray fox, armadillo. Ñandus (rheas) common on RP 2.
