Santa Fe Capital

Cradle of the Argentine National Constitution (1853). 1680 San Francisco Convent — one of the oldest colonial buildings in the country in active use

Last updated: April 2026

Santa Fe de la Vera Cruz (415,000 metro inhabitants, capital of Santa Fe province — Argentina's 2nd most economically important) is one of the country's best-preserved colonial destinations and carries particular historical weight: the National Argentine Constitution was sanctioned in its Cabildo in 1853, the founding document of the modern Argentine federal state, earning it the official title "Cradle of the Constitution." Founded by Juan de Garay in 1573 originally in Cayastá (80 km north, today Santa Fe la Vieja), San Javier River floods forced its move in 1660 to its current site, on the confluence of the Salado River and Setúbal Lagoon — preserving its colonial layout and central heritage complex since then. The most emblematic building is the San Francisco Convent and Church (1680), one of the few colonial buildings in continuous use since the 17th century in Argentina (alongside Santo Domingo Convent in Santiago del Estero), National Historic Monument, with Guaraní-Jesuit carvings, original baroque altarpiece, Aljibe courtyard and historic library. The Historic Cabildo (1685, seat of the 1853 Constituent Congress, now Provincial History Museum), Casa de los Aldao (Av. Gral López 1556 — colonial elite museum house from the 18th century), Cathedral of All Saints (19th century, neoclassical), and Plaza 25 de Mayo (civic heart) complete the historic core walkable in 4-5 hours. Beyond the heritage: the Santa Fe Brewery (historic brand since 1912, guided tours with tasting, USD 8-15), the Salado East Costanera, Setúbal Beach (river beach on the lagoon, lively in summer), the Santa Fe Casino and Mercado del Río (gastronomy and live music). The Uranga-Sylvestre Begnis Subfluvial Tunnel (1969, 2,397 m under the Paraná River) connects Santa Fe with Paraná (Entre Ríos) in 6 minutes — an iconic South American engineering crossing, toll USD 4-8. Sauce Viejo Airport (SFN) with daily flights from AEP (1h, USD 70-180). Combinable with Rosario (170 km south), Paraná (30 km via tunnel) and Cayastá (80 km north).

Frequently Asked Questions about Santa Fe capital

Why is Santa Fe important in Argentine history?

Santa Fe is the "Cradle of the Argentine National Constitution" — it was here that the 1853 Constitution organizing the country as a modern federal state was sanctioned, in the Historic Cabildo (now Museum). The city was also one of the first foundations in present-day Argentine territory: Juan de Garay founded it in 1573 in Cayastá (80 km north, today "Santa Fe la Vieja"), but San Javier River floods forced its move to its current site in 1660. It’s the country’s 2nd most economically important province, provincial capital with 415,000 inhabitants (391,231 + metro 600,000), and preserves one of the country’s best-preserved colonial complexes: the San Francisco Convent (1680, the oldest continuously-used building in Argentina alongside Santo Domingo Convent in Santiago).

What can you see in Santa Fe capital?

San Francisco Convent and Church (1680) — one of the oldest colonial buildings in continuous use in the country, declared National Historic Monument, holds Guaraní-Jesuit carvings and the Aljibe courtyard. Historic Cabildo (1685, seat of the 1853 Constituent Congress, now Provincial History Museum). Casa de los Aldao (Av. Gral López 1556, museum colonial home). Cathedral of All Saints (19th century, neoclassical). Santa Fe Brewery (guided tour with tasting, beer museum). Santa Fe Casino (on the Costanera). East Costanera of the Salado River and Setúbal Beach (river beach zone). Boulevard Gálvez (main shopping promenade). Mercado del Río (gastronomy and music).

How many days do you need in Santa Fe capital?

1-2 days are enough: day 1 historic core (San Francisco Convent + Cabildo + Cathedral + Casa Aldao + Plaza 25 de Mayo, walkable in 4-5 hours), day 2 Santa Fe Brewery + East Costanera + Casino + Mercado del Río. If combining with Cayastá (Santa Fe la Vieja, 80 km north), add 1 more day. Combinable also with Paraná (Entre Ríos, 30 km east through the Hernandarias Subfluvial Tunnel) and Rosario (170 km south). Sauce Viejo Airport (SFN) has daily flights from Aeroparque (1h, USD 70-180).

Where to stay in Santa Fe?

Historic center (around Plaza 25 de Mayo and the Cathedral) has the best offer. Hotel Conquistador (4★, 25 de Mayo 2676, USD 90-150 double) — city classic. Mango Hotel Boutique (4★, USD 110-180) — modern facing the Costanera. Río Grande Hotel (3★ downtown, USD 60-100). Hostels: Hostel Santa Fe (USD 18-35 dorm). For long weekends and holidays (Easter, July 9, August 17) book 30+ days — the city receives regional provincial tourism.

What is the Santa Fe Brewery?

Cerveza Santa Fe is the historic Santa Fe brand, founded in 1912 by German and Swiss immigrants, bought by Quilmes/Brahma in 2005 but still produced at its original city plant (Av. López y Planes 5710). The factory offers guided tours (Monday-Friday 10:00 and 15:00, USD 8-15 per person, online reservation at cervezasantafe.com): production line tour (packaging, fermentation, bottling), beer museum with 1920s-30s historic machinery, tasting room with 4 varieties (Pilsen, Lager, Stout, seasonal Bock). Santa Fe Pilsen is the preferred brand of the Argentine Litoral, particularly strong in provincial consumption. Top souvenir: 6-bottle pack with personalized label.

Is the Subfluvial Tunnel worth it?

The Subfluvial Tunnel "Raúl Uranga - Carlos Sylvestre Begnis" (inaugurated 1969) connects Santa Fe with Paraná (Entre Ríos) under the Paraná River, 2,397 meters long, a South American engineering feat. There’s a toll (USD 4-8 per car), 6-minute crossing. There is an Interpretation Center next to the Santa Fe portal (free entry, exhibits construction machinery and the project’s technical history). Crossing to the Entre Ríos side allows combining Santa Fe capital with Paraná (Entre Ríos capital, 30 km, beautiful Costanera and tunnel) in a full day. The alternative to the tunnel is the Rosario-Victoria Bridge (much longer, 220 km south).

When is the best time to visit Santa Fe?

March-May and September-November are the ideal months: mild weather (15-26°C), little rain, long days. June-August: mild winter but with morning fog over the Salado River (spectacular for photography). December-February: hot summer (28-35°C) and high humidity — the city lives more in late afternoon-evening hours. Setúbal Beach fills in January-February with regional tourism. Easter and July 9 (Independence Day) have religious processions and civic acts at the Cathedral and Plaza 25 de Mayo.
