Chicoana is a small colonial town of 5,000 inhabitants located 40 km southwest of Salta city, Argentina (lat -25.1039, lng -65.5436), at 1,260 meters altitude in the Lerma Valley. It is the gateway to the Cuesta del Obispo and the route to Cachi. Known for its annual Tamal Festival (tamales are a local specialty), colonial architecture, horseback riding in the Quebrada de Escoipe and rafting on the Chicoana River. A pleasant stop or overnight before tackling the mountain passes.
