Cafayate is a wine town at 1,660 m altitude in the Calchaqui Valleys of Salta province, Argentina, recognised as the world capital of Torrontes and one of the most important high-altitude wine regions on the planet. With more than 30 wineries open to visitors within a 20 km radius, Cafayate produces Torrontes, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat under unique conditions: 340+ sunny days per year, a diurnal temperature swing of up to 25°C, and the sandy-calcareous soils of the Calchaqui Valleys. National Route 68 connecting Salta city with Cafayate (192 km, 3 hours) cuts through the Quebrada de las Conchas, a canyon of red sandstone formations sculpted over 70 million years, featuring iconic geoforms like Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat), El Anfiteatro (a natural amphitheatre with exceptional acoustics), El Obelisco, Los Castillos and El Fraile. The town receives over 250,000 visitors per year. Northward, Ruta 40 continues through the Calchaqui Valleys for 157 km of scenic gravel road to Cachi.

The Wineries: Cafayate's Wine Route
Cafayate concentrates one of the highest densities of wineries in any wine region globally, all within easy reach by bike, car or organised tour. Most require advance booking from May to November, especially for lunch pairings.
Bodega El Esteco
Founded in 1892, El Esteco is the largest and most emblematic winery in the Calchaqui Valley. Its Don David and Old Vines 1945 lines have international recognition. Offers guided tours with tasting, a high-end restaurant with pairing menus and a boutique hotel on the estate. Open daily; lunch reservations strongly recommended. Located on RN 68, 2 km from Cafayate town centre.
Bodega Piattelli
Premium winery with modern facilities and a panoramic terrace overlooking the vineyards and mountains. Produces Malbec, Torrontes and Cabernet Sauvignon at the high end. Restaurant offers regional cuisine paired with the full range. Tours include the underground cellar. 3 km from town on the road to the valley.
Bodega Nanni
Family winery with 100+ years of history and the oldest Torrontes vines in Cafayate. Intimate, personalised visits with the winemaker explaining the process. Affordable, authentic, walk-ins welcome. Located in the centre of town, just steps from the plaza.
Domingo Hermanos
Family winery founded in 1940, known for excellent value. Produces Torrontes, Malbec, Cabernet and sparkling wines. Visits without reservation during opening hours; tasting included in the tour price. Popular with backpackers and budget travellers.
Finca Las Nubes (Bodega Mounier)
Located up the hill, 6 km from town via gravel road, offering the most spectacular views of any winery in Cafayate: vineyards in the foreground, multicoloured sierras behind. Artisanal winery with limited production. Perfect to combine with a regional lunch on its terrace. Reachable by bike or car.
Other notable wineries
The list continues with Vasija Secreta (elegant, with gardens), San Pedro de Yacochuya (Michel Rolland wines at 2,035 m altitude), Colomé (founded 1831, Argentina's oldest working winery; main building at 2,300 m but its "Altura Máxima" vineyard at 3,111 m is among the highest commercial vineyards in the world; with the James Turrell art museum, 2 hours north of Cafayate via Ruta 40), Amalaya (free tastings) and several smaller boutique wineries you can discover by walking or biking around town.
Quebrada de las Conchas (the Cafayate Canyon)
The Quebrada de las Conchas is a 75 km canyon along RN 68 between Cafayate and Alemania. Its red, orange and ochre sandstone formations were sculpted by wind and water over millions of years. Driving the route takes 1.5–2 hours without stops, but plan a half day with stops at each geoform.
Main stops
- Garganta del Diablo: a narrow gorge in red rock, accessible on foot in 10 minutes from the road. Inside, the walls reach 30 metres high. Stunning at any time of day.
- El Anfiteatro: a semicircular natural cavity with perfect acoustics. Folk musicians play inside, creating a unique sonic experience. Mandatory stop.
- Los Castillos: formations resembling medieval castles. Visible from the road; signposted viewpoint.
- El Obelisco: a 28-metre tall rock column visible from the highway.
- El Fraile: a formation that resembles a hooded monk. On the road, just before reaching Cafayate from Salta.
- Las Ventanas: natural rock arches eroded by wind. Short 5-minute walk from the road.
Best photography light is morning (driving from Cafayate towards Salta) or afternoon (driving from Salta towards Cafayate), when the sun illuminates the red walls. There are no services in the canyon (no toilets, no shops, no fuel): bring water, snacks and a full tank.
The Town and Beyond
Cafayate town
Cafayate has a compact, walkable centre around Plaza 20 de Febrero. The Cathedral Nuestra Señora del Rosario, the Museo de la Vid y el Vino (excellent museography on Calchaqui wine history) and streets lined with artisan shops, wine ice-cream parlours (the Torrontes and Cabernet flavours are an experience) and Creole restaurants. The town has a slow, relaxed pace ideal for unhurried wandering.
Cascadas del Rio Colorado
12 km north of Cafayate, a 3 km trail (1.5 hours round trip) leads to waterfalls on the Rio Colorado. Easy difficulty, ideal for a half morning. The trail crosses the river several times (wear shoes that can get wet). The water is crystal clear but cold. In summer, it is a natural escape from the heat.
Biking the vineyards
Several agencies and hostels rent bicycles to tour the wineries. The area is flat, distances are short (the farthest winery is 6 km from town) and roads are safe. A classic circuit includes Nanni, Domingo Hermanos, Vasija Secreta and Finca Las Nubes, with a tasting at each stop. Perfect for a full day with a winery lunch break.
Where to Stay
Cafayate has excellent hotel options. Hostels from USD 12–18/night, mid-range hotels USD 40–80, vineyard boutique hotels USD 100–200, and premium lodges like Patios de Cafayate (Grace Cafayate) or Viñas de Cafayate from USD 200+. Most accommodation is concentrated within a 10-block radius of the town centre. Book ahead during harvest (February–March), Easter and winter holidays.
Notable hotels: Hotel Los Toneles (3★, Camila Quintana de Niño 38 — 5-minute walk from the main square, 200 m from Bodega Nanni; en-suite rooms, breakfast, outdoor pool, USD 60–90/night), Patios de Cafayate / Grace (luxury in a historic hacienda, from USD 250), Viñas de Cafayate Wine Resort (vineyard hotel, from USD 200), Killa Cafayate (adobe boutique inn, USD 90–140), and El Cortijo Hotel Boutique (colonial-style, USD 100–160).
