San Lorenzo is a residential and tourist village located just 12 km northwest of Salta city, Argentina (lat -24.7267, lng -65.4833), at 1,450 meters altitude in the foothills of the Yungas cloud forest. Its main attraction is the San Lorenzo Gorge, a subtropical canyon with a crystal-clear stream, lush vegetation of tree ferns, tipas, cebils and alder trees, and extraordinary biodiversity including over 180 bird species. The town developed as a residential area for the Salta elite in the early 20th century, with mansions surrounded by gardens, and today it is an ideal half-day getaway to escape the city heat. From San Lorenzo you can continue to the Cuesta del Obispo and Cachi, or use it as a tranquil base to explore the region. The temperature is 3-5 degrees cooler than in Salta city, with cool nights year-round.

What to See and Do
San Lorenzo Gorge
The main attraction: a narrow canyon where a crystal-clear stream flows between walls covered in subtropical vegetation. The main trail follows the stream for 2 km (one way), crossing it several times over rustic bridges and stepping stones. The vegetation is dense: tree ferns, lianas, orchids and tall trees create a natural green tunnel. At the end there is a small waterfall. Low difficulty, suitable for families. Time: 1.5-2 hours round trip. Wear shoes that can get wet.
Birdwatching
The Yungas forest in San Lorenzo harbors over 180 bird species. You can spot toucans, tanagers, hummingbirds, raptors and the emblematic Tucuman parrot. The gorge and surrounding trails are excellent observation points, especially at dawn. Local specialized guides offer half-day birdwatching outings. San Lorenzo is considered one of the best easily-accessible birdwatching spots in the NOA region.
Trekking and Hiking
Besides the main gorge, trails climb up the mountain slopes with panoramic views of the Lerma Valley and Salta city. The ridge trail (3-4 hours round trip, moderate difficulty) offers spectacular views. For more demanding hikes, the surrounding hills have half-day and full-day options.
Dining and Village Walk
San Lorenzo has an above-average culinary offering: regional and contemporary restaurants, garden cafes, teahouses and artisanal ice cream shops. The main street (Juan Carlos Davalos) concentrates the commercial activity. On weekends there are craft and local produce fairs. It is a pleasant stroll among mansions with gardens.
When to Visit
- Fall (March-May): Excellent season. Pleasant temperatures, changing foliage, little rain. Ideal for trekking and birdwatching.
- Winter (June-August): Dry and cool. Good time for hikes without heat. Less dense vegetation makes it easier to spot birds. Cold nights.
- Spring (September-November): Flowers blooming, migratory birds arriving. Best time for birdwatching. Perfect temperatures.
- Summer (December-February): Hot and rainy, but the gorge is at its greenest. Rain can swell the stream; check conditions before going. The forest canopy provides shade from the heat.
