Santa Rosa de Tastil is a pre-Hispanic archaeological site at 3,110 meters altitude in the Quebrada del Toro, Salta province, Argentina (lat -24.4533, lng -65.9650), 103 km west of Salta city via National Route 51. It is the largest pre-Hispanic archaeological site in the Argentine northwest (NOA), with over 1,100 stone structures spread across 12 hectares on a hilltop. It was a city inhabited between 1336 and 1439 AD by an estimated 2,000-3,000 people, functioning as a trade hub between puna, valley and eastern forest peoples. The current village has a small site museum with excavation finds. The site is on the Train to the Clouds route and can be visited as part of the Quebrada del Toro journey to San Antonio de los Cobres.

How to Get There
103 km from Salta via RN 51 through Campo Quijano and the Quebrada del Toro. Mostly paved road. 2-2.5 hour drive. No regular public transport; organized tours or rental car recommended.
What to See and Do
Pre-Hispanic Ruins
The 12-hectare site covers a hilltop with panoramic views. Walk among the foundations of 1,100 structures: houses, storerooms, ceremonial plazas and streets. A marked trail covers the main sectors in 1-2 hours. Explanatory signs throughout. The high point offers a panoramic understanding of the city's strategic trade-route location.
Site Museum
A small museum displays excavation finds: ceramics, arrowheads, stone tools, metal objects and textile remains.
Petroglyphs
Nearby rocks feature petroglyphs with llama, human and geometric representations. Ask the site guardian.
When to Visit
- Fall & Winter (April-August): Best season. Clear skies, dry, cool but bearable daytime temperatures.
- Spring (September-November): Good, rising temperatures, few visitors.
