Talampaya National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting a spectacular red sandstone canyon in La Rioja province, Argentina (lat -29.8, lng -67.84). The canyon's walls rise to 143 metres, with 1,500-year-old petroglyphs carved by pre-Columbian inhabitants and Andean condors soaring overhead. Technically in La Rioja, Talampaya is almost always visited from San Juan combined with the nearby Valle de la Luna (75 km apart). The guided vehicle circuit through the canyon interior reveals the enormity of the rock walls, ancient rock art, the natural amphitheatre (with incredible acoustics) and geological formations.

Guided vehicle tour through the canyon interior (2-3 hours). Stops include the 143 m walls (the sense of scale is overwhelming), the natural amphitheatre (guides demonstrate acoustics), the Botanical Garden (desert plants), and the Condor Viewpoint. You cannot enter independently.
Petroglyphs
1,500-year-old rock carvings depicting animals (guanacos, rheas, pumas), human figures and geometric patterns. Evidence of pre-Columbian cultures that inhabited this now-arid landscape.
