Red rock canyon walls at Talampaya National Park

Talampaya National Park

UNESCO World Heritage — 143m red rock canyon, ancient petroglyphs and Andean condors

Last updated: April 2026

Talampaya National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting a spectacular red sandstone canyon in La Rioja province, Argentina (lat -29.8, lng -67.84). The canyon's walls rise to 143 metres, with 1,500-year-old petroglyphs carved by pre-Columbian inhabitants and Andean condors soaring overhead. Technically in La Rioja, Talampaya is almost always visited from San Juan combined with the nearby Valle de la Luna (75 km apart). The guided vehicle circuit through the canyon interior reveals the enormity of the rock walls, ancient rock art, the natural amphitheatre (with incredible acoustics) and geological formations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall are the canyon walls?

The red sandstone walls reach 143 metres high, creating an overwhelming sense of scale as you drive through the narrow canyon.

Can you visit independently?

No. Talampaya requires a guided circuit, either in park vehicles or your own vehicle following a guide. This protects the petroglyphs and formations.

Is it worth combining with Valle de la Luna?

Absolutely. The two parks are 75 km apart and complement each other perfectly. Talampaya for the red canyon and petroglyphs, Valle de la Luna for fossil formations. Most visitors do both in a 2-day circuit.

When is the best time to visit?

March-May and September-November offer the best temperatures. Summer (December-February) is extremely hot (40+ degrees) with no shade. The canyon is impressive year-round.
