Valle de la Luna (Ischigualasto) is one of the world's most important palaeontological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (lat -30.1628, lng -67.8397). Located 330 km from San Juan city, this provincial park protects 230-million-year-old geological formations from the Triassic period where fossils of the Eoraptor and Herrerasaurus, among the first dinosaurs to walk the Earth, were discovered. The 40 km guided circuit reveals surreal formations sculpted by millions of years of erosion: The Bocce Court (naturally round stone spheres), The Mushroom, The Submarine, The Sphinx. During full moon nights, a special nocturnal tour transforms the landscape into an otherworldly experience.

How to Get There
330 km from San Juan city, approximately 4-4.5 hours by paved road. Organised tours are the most common option (departure at 5:00-6:00 AM, return by evening). By rental car: paved road all the way, no 4x4 needed. Often combined with Talampaya (75 km south) in a 2-day circuit.
What to See and Do
40 km Circuit
The park is visited on a 40 km guided vehicle circuit (your own car following a guide vehicle, or park transport). 5 mandatory stops at the most impressive formations. Duration: 2.5-3 hours. Guides explain the geology and palaeontology at each stop. You cannot explore independently.
Key Formations
Cancha de Bochas: Dozens of perfectly round stone spheres scattered across the desert, formed by millions of years of erosion. El Hongo: A mushroom-shaped rock formation. El Submarino: A submarine-shaped formation rising from the desert floor. Valle Pintado: Multicoloured layers of sediment revealing geological time.
Full Moon Tours
During full moon nights (5 nights per month), the park offers a special nocturnal circuit. The lunar light illuminates the formations creating an otherworldly atmosphere. One of the most unique experiences in Argentina. Book well in advance.
