San Antonio de Areco is a town in Buenos Aires province, Argentina (lat -34.2458, lng -59.4733), 113 km northwest of the capital, universally recognized as the capital of gaucho tradition. Founded in 1730 on the banks of the Areco River, this town of 23,000 preserves its criolla heritage: cobblestone streets, colonial mansions, historic pulperias (the Pulperia La Blanqueada, immortalized by Ricardo Guiraldes in "Don Segundo Sombra"), criolla silverwork workshops where artisans maintain a 200-year-old tradition, and century-old estancias offering day-in-the-country experiences with barbecue, horseback riding and folklore. The Ricardo Guiraldes Gaucho Museum houses the country's most important collection on gaucho life. Every November, the Fiesta de la Tradicion (since 1939) attracts riders, artisans and folk musicians from across Argentina.
