Atuel Canyon

Atuel Canyon

50 km of multicolor rock formations between Valle Grande and El Nihuil — southern Mendoza's iconic day trip

The Atuel Canyon is a 50-kilometer gorge carved by the Atuel River in the southern part of Mendoza Province, between the Valle Grande Reservoir to the north and El Nihuil Dam to the south, accessed from the city of San Rafael 37 km away (45 minutes by RP 173). It is the most-visited natural attraction in southern Mendoza, with over 200,000 tourists annually, regarded as one of the most spectacular geological landscapes in Argentina due to its diversity of multicolor rock formations (ochre, red, gray, white) sculpted over millions of years by water and wind erosion on Triassic-Jurassic sedimentary rocks. The complete drive takes 4-6 hours with stops at the major formations, all marked with viewpoints: Los Monstruos, The Submarine, The Toad, Fountain of Wishes, The Enchanted City, The Condor, The Mirror, The Lizard, The Castle, The Amphitheater, The Gothic Cathedral, The Crocodiles. The canyon begins at Valle Grande Reservoir (1,350 m elevation, 35 km², built in 1972 with a 110-meter dam), where activities include kayaking, catamaran tours, windsurfing and pejerrey fishing. A few kilometers downstream begin the Class II-III rapids of the Atuel River, navigable by raft (10-12 km descents, USD 40-65 per person), one of southern Mendoza's flagship adventures. The route ends at El Nihuil Dam (1,350 m, 96 km²), the largest reservoir on the Atuel River, where you can fish and motorboat. The most-purchased experience is the full-day tour from San Rafael (USD 35-55 per person) combining the canyon route with a bilingual guide, photo stops at the rock formations, lunch at a rustic restaurant and optional rafting or zipline. The canyon is accessible year-round, with the best time being October-April (spring through fall) at 18-30°C. October-November and March-April are ideal to avoid summer heat and high-season prices. RP 173 is fully paved the entire way. There is no direct public transport — options are rental car, organized tour or private remis.

The Route: Most Spectacular Rock Formations

RP 173 traverses the canyon north-to-south (Valle Grande → Nihuil) with marked viewpoints at each formation. We recommend stopping at least at:

Los Monstruos (The Monsters)

Three humanoid red rock formations that look like giant figures gazing at the horizon. First major stop, 5 km from Valle Grande. Concrete viewing platform.

El Submarino (The Submarine)

Elongated formation with the silhouette of a submarine emerging from the canyon. One of the most photographed. Morning light (8-10 AM) is best.

The Enchanted City

Cluster of vertical towers and pinnacles resembling an eroded medieval city. Panoramic view from the upper viewpoint. 12 km into the canyon.

The Amphitheater

Semicircular cavity with 80-meter vertical walls, similar to a Roman amphitheater. Notable natural echo. Favorite spot for photography with people for scale.

The Gothic Cathedral

Pointed pinnacle agglomeration evoking gothic cathedral spires. Best light at sunset when shadows enhance the relief.

The Crocodiles

Low elongated formations resembling crocodiles resting beside the river. Easy access from the road, ideal for kids.
