Cerro Catedral is the largest and best-equipped ski resort in South America. With over 120 kilometres of runs, 40 lifts and terrain ranging from a base at 1,030 metres to a summit at 2,405 metres, it offers skiing and snowboarding for every level — from absolute beginners to experts chasing off-piste powder in the Patagonian backcountry.
The mountain takes its name from the granite spires crowning its summit, which resemble the Gothic towers of a cathedral. These same rock formations provide the dramatic backdrop for Refugio Frey, one of the most iconic trekking destinations in Argentine Patagonia.
Ski season: June to October
The ski season at Cerro Catedral generally runs from mid-June to mid-October, peaking in July and August when snow conditions are optimal and visitor numbers reach their maximum. The resort has 40 lifts including chairlifts, T-bars and surface lifts providing access to runs at every difficulty level.
Green runs (beginner) are concentrated at the base, while red and black runs offer challenges for intermediate and advanced skiers. Freeride enthusiasts will find spectacular powder in the off-piste sectors after every storm.
A daily lift pass in high season costs approximately USD 50-70. Multi-day passes offer significant discounts (5 days for USD 200-280). Full equipment hire (skis, boots, poles) costs approximately USD 25-35 per day.
Summer trekking: Refugio Frey
In summer (December to March), Cerro Catedral transforms into a paradise for trekking. The star trail is the hike to Refugio Frey, set on the shores of Laguna Toncek, a turquoise alpine lake surrounded by granite spires. The one-way hike takes 3-4 hours (9 km) from the base, with an elevation gain of 800 metres. Difficulty is moderate to high.
Refugio Frey offers basic accommodation for those who want to stay overnight and watch the sunrise over the lagoon. It is also the starting point for the Refugio Traverse, a multi-day circuit connecting Frey with the San Martin, Jakob and Lopez refugios.
Mountain biking and summer activities
The mountain has marked trails for mountain biking at various difficulty levels, with bikes available for hire at the base. Other activities include rock climbing, tandem paragliding, horseback riding and guided nature walks through the Patagonian forest.
