Cerro Tronador is the highest volcano in the Bariloche region, its 3,491 metres dominating the southern horizon. The name means "Thunderer" and comes from the thunderous sound produced by constant ice calving from its seven glaciers — a rumble that echoes through the valley and was mistaken for thunder by early explorers. The day trip to Tronador is one of the most powerful excursions from Bariloche: a full day of volcanic landscapes, glaciers, waterfalls and Patagonian forests that leave visitors speechless.
The Black Glacier: a unique ice formation
The main attraction is the Ventisquero Negro (Black Glacier), a glacier covered in a dark layer of volcanic sediment and rock that gives it a surreal appearance. Unlike the white and blue glaciers of El Calafate, the Black Glacier resembles a mysterious river of dirty ice descending the volcano's flanks, creating an extraordinary visual contrast with the snowy peaks above.
The calving of ice blocks from the Black Glacier is constant, each event sounding like thunder reverberating off the valley walls. Witnessing one of these collapses is a hair-raising experience: tonnes of ice crash down with a deafening roar, sending columns of water and ice dust into the air, all visible from the observation walkways.
The route: a full-day experience
The full-day excursion departs from Bariloche early in the morning and covers approximately 85 km of gravel road through Nahuel Huapi National Park. The road itself is an experience: it passes Lake Mascardi (emerald-coloured waters), Lake Gutierrez, the Alerces Waterfall (a cascade surrounded by native forest) and Pampa Linda (a forest clearing that serves as base camp for mountaineers attempting the Tronador summit).
From Pampa Linda, the final stretch to the Black Glacier viewpoint follows a narrow gravel road with tight bends and precipitous drop-offs. Tours include this section by minibus. At the viewpoint, wooden walkways bring you close to the glacier front where you can hear and see the calving events.
The excursion from Bariloche costs from USD 62 with Civitatis, including transfer and guide. It lasts approximately 10-11 hours. Bring a packed lunch, warm clothing (temperatures drop several degrees near the glacier even in summer) and comfortable footwear.
