Three days is the minimum to capture the essence of Argentina's Northwest. This itinerary combines Salta city (colonial center, MAAM, cable car), the Quebrada de Humahuaca (UNESCO World Heritage, Purmamarca, Tilcara) and a choice excursion to either Salinas Grandes (salt flats at 3,450m) or Cafayate (wine country and Route 68). It works perfectly for a long weekend, a layover from the direct Sao Paulo--Salta flight (4 hours with LATAM), or as an add-on to a longer Argentina trip. All three excursions depart from central Salta as organized tours (from $40--50 USD each) or can be done with a rental car. Estimated budget (excluding flights and hotel): $100--150 USD per person.
Day 1: Salta City — Historic Center, MAAM Museum & San Bernardo Hill
Morning exploring the colonial center: Plaza 9 de Julio, Cathedral, Cabildo, San Francisco Church. Lunch at the Mercado Central with empanadas saltenas -- widely considered the best in Argentina. Afternoon: visit the MAAM to see the Children of Llullaillaco -- an unforgettable experience. Later, ride the cable car to San Bernardo Hill for panoramic views of the city and Lerma Valley. Dinner at a pena folklorica on Calle Balcarce: live folk music, Torrontes wine and regional cuisine. This is Salta's essential cultural experience.
- Plaza 9 de Julio and colonial center
- MAAM -- 500-year-old Inca mummies
- San Bernardo Hill cable car
- Pena folklorica on Calle Balcarce
Day 2: Quebrada de Humahuaca — Purmamarca, Tilcara & Humahuaca
Early departure (7:00 AM) to the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. First stop at Purmamarca for the Hill of Seven Colors and the artisan market. Continue to Tilcara: Pucara (pre-Inca ruins with valley views) and the Devil's Throat. Lunch in Tilcara (try grilled llama or goat cheese empanadas). If time permits, continue to Humahuaca for the Independence Monument. Return to Salta in the evening (~3 hours by road). A long day but every kilometer is worth it.
- Purmamarca -- Hill of Seven Colors at sunrise
- Tilcara -- pre-Inca Pucara and Devil's Throat
- Artisan market with Andean textiles
- Humahuaca -- UNESCO World Heritage
Day 3: Salinas Grandes or Cafayate (Choose Your Adventure)
Final day: choose between two equally spectacular excursions. Option A -- Salinas Grandes: salt flats at 3,450m altitude via the Cuesta del Lipan (4,170m), iconic perspective photos, salt artisans. Full day, return to Salta in the afternoon. Option B -- Cafayate via Route 68: Argentina's most scenic drive through the Quebrada de las Conchas (rock formations), winery tasting, wine ice cream at Miranda. Full day, return in the afternoon. Both options are incredible -- if you love extreme nature, choose Salinas; if you love wine and landscapes, choose Cafayate.
- Option A: Salinas Grandes -- salt desert at 3,450m
- Option A: Cuesta del Lipan -- mountain pass at 4,170m
- Option B: Route 68 -- Quebrada de las Conchas
- Option B: Torrontes tasting in Cafayate
