La Quiaca

Bolivia border — Km 0 of National Route 9, 3,442 m, gateway to Villazon, Tupiza and the Uyuni Salt Flats

Last updated: April 2026

La Quiaca is a border town of 17,000 people in the far north of Jujuy province, in the Yavi Department, at 3,442 meters above sea level, on the south bank of the La Quiaca River that separates it from the Bolivian city of Villazon on the north bank. It is the end point — Km 0 from the south of the continent coming from Bolivia, or Km 0 going south within Argentina — of National Route 9 (5,194 km total when adding RN 40 and the southern Argentine-Chilean extension), making La Quiaca one of the highest cities in Argentina and the most important border crossing with Bolivia alongside Aguas Blancas (Salta). Founded in 1883 with the Central Norte railway, it preserves its highland village character with adobe and tile architecture, the imposing San Francisco Church (1922, neocolonial style with a 30-meter tower), the Route 9 Km 0 Monument marking the continental northern endpoint of the route and a mandatory photo stop, and the Sunday Regional Fair where Kolla and Quechua peasants from both sides of the border converge to sell textiles, ceramics, leather, chuño, fava beans and quinoa. The Manca Fiesta (Festival of Exchange) in October is the most important cultural event, with pre-Columbian origins of continental barter. La Quiaca is also a base for excursions to Yavi (16 km east, historic seat of the Marquisate of Tojo and home to one of northern Argentina\'s oldest Jesuit churches, founded in 1690), to Pozuelos Lagoon (Ramsar site, flamingos, 120 km south), and to Puna communities like Santa Catalina and Cusi Cusi to the west. The climate is dry highland: sunny mild days (20°C in summer), always cold nights (below 0°C in winter, +5-8°C in summer), low humidity, extreme UV radiation, thin air requiring progressive acclimatization. Cuisine is typically Andean: oven-roasted llama (lean, slightly sweet meat), locro, llama tamales, quinoa empanadas, api with pastel (a hot drink of purple corn with a fritter), corn chicha. You arrive from Salta (480 km on RN 9, 7 hours by car) or from San Salvador de Jujuy (290 km, 4h30) with daily bus services. La Quiaca works as a base to extend your trip into Bolivia: crossing the international pedestrian bridge takes you into Villazon, from where buses depart to Tupiza (95 km) and Uyuni (370 km, 6h), enabling one of the most iconic Andean circuits on the continent. Customs operates 7:00 AM - 10:00 PM with standard documentation (passport; Argentine DNI accepted for entry to Bolivia for 30 days).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I cross from La Quiaca to Bolivia?

The La Quiaca (Argentina) - Villazon (Bolivia) border crossing is via the international pedestrian/vehicle bridge over the La Quiaca River. Customs hours: 7:00 AM - 10:00 PM. You need a passport (Argentine DNI is accepted for short Mercosur visits). Stamp out at Argentine immigration and stamp in at Bolivian. The crossing is fast on normal days (15-30 min); during Easter and January it can take 2-3 hours. Villazon has markets and a bus terminal connecting to Tupiza, Potosi and Uyuni.

What can I do in La Quiaca?

La Quiaca is more of a passing point than a destination, but it offers: the Route 9 Km 0 Monument (mandatory photo), San Francisco Church (1922, neocolonial), the Sunday Regional Fair (crafts, textiles, food), and the History Museum (cannon-rifle from the Battle of Tarija, 18th-century coins). The gem is the side trip to Yavi (16 km), with the San Francisco de Yavi Church (1690), one of the oldest in northern Argentina. The Manca Fiesta in October draws Andean artisans from across the highlands.

How high is La Quiaca?

La Quiaca sits at 3,442 meters above sea level — one of the highest cities in Argentina. Yavi (16km) is at 3,500m, Abra Pampa at 3,484m. At these altitudes altitude sickness ("apunamiento") is common: headache, dizziness, nausea. Recommended acclimatization: first sleep in Purmamarca (2,324m), then Humahuaca (2,940m), and only then La Quiaca. Drink lots of water, sip coca tea, eat light, don't smoke, sleep at least 8 hours.

Is La Quiaca dangerous?

La Quiaca is generally calm as border towns go. Common risks: currency exchange scams (use official exchange offices, not the street), smuggling across the border (don't carry packages for strangers), altitude (apunamiento). There are no chronic problems with street violence. The bus terminal and border crossing have police presence 24/7.

How do I get to La Quiaca?

From Salta: 480 km on RN 9, fully paved, 7 hours by car, 9-10 hours by bus (Flecha Bus, Balut, La Veloz del Norte). USD 28-45 one-way. From San Salvador de Jujuy: 290 km, 4h30 by car. From Bolivia: from Villazon it is a pedestrian crossing. From Tupiza (Bolivia) it is 95 km (2h), from Uyuni 370 km (6h). There is no airport in La Quiaca; the nearest is Jujuy (JUJ, 300km).

Where to sleep in La Quiaca?

Modest options: Hotel de Turismo La Quiaca (3-star, the best known), Hotel Frontera (2-star, budget), Hotel Munay (2-star), Hostel Crucero (shared dorm), Residencial Quisqueya (family-style pension). Prices USD 25-65 for a double. La Quiaca has limited supply — many travelers sleep in Humahuaca (2h30) with better hotels and come down to La Quiaca for daytime crossings.

What is the Manca Fiesta?

The Manca Fiesta (Festival of Exchange, "barter" in Quechua) is celebrated each October in La Quiaca and dates back centuries to pre-Hispanic indigenous exchange ceremonies. Artisans from the Argentine Puna, Bolivia and the Chilean altiplano gather to barter (no money) textiles, ceramics, leather, freeze-dried potatoes (chuño) and Andean grains. Today monetary trade coexists with the ancestral form. Three days of activities, folk music and traditional foods.

Can I combine this with Uyuni (Bolivia)?

Yes, this is a popular combination. From La Quiaca cross to Villazon, take a bus to Tupiza (95km, 2h, USD 12), and from Tupiza book a 4-day 4x4 tour to the Uyuni Salt Flats (USD 190-250 per person). The tour visits Uyuni Salt Flats, Laguna Colorada, Laguna Verde, Sol de Mañana geysers and Polques hot springs. It ends in Uyuni town. Alternative: direct Villazon-Uyuni bus (12h, USD 25). Plan a minimum 5-7 days for the Bolivian extension.
