Molinos is a village of just 200 inhabitants at 2,020 meters in the heart of the Calchaqui Valleys, Salta Province. Located at the confluence of the Calchaqui and Luracatao rivers, 208 km from Salta city (6-7 hours by road) and 61 km south of Cachi, Molinos is one of the best-preserved colonial villages in northwestern Argentina. Its name comes from the flour mills that once operated on the river's current in colonial times. Today, the dirt streets, adobe houses with cardones-wood roofs, the 17th-century church preserving the mummy of the last Spanish governor, and a silence broken only by birds and wind make Molinos a place where time seems to have stopped centuries ago. Twenty kilometers from the village, Bodega Colome -- one of the highest wineries in the world -- houses an extraordinary light-art museum by American artist James Turrell, creating a fascinating contrast between the ancestral and the contemporary.

Iglesia de San Pedro Nolasco: The Governor's Mummy
The Iglesia de San Pedro Nolasco, built in the 17th century and rebuilt in the 18th, is Molinos' most emblematic building. What makes this church unique is the mummy of Nicolas Severo de Isasmendi, the last Spanish governor of Salta. The body, dressed in period clothing, is preserved in a glass case in a side chapel. The mummification was not intentional: the dry soil, 2,000m altitude, low humidity and cool temperatures halted decomposition naturally. The church is open during the day, free admission (donations appreciated).
Bodega Colome: High-Altitude Wine & Contemporary Art
Twenty km from Molinos via gravel road, Bodega Colome is one of the most singular wineries in the world. Founded in 1831, it is one of Argentina's oldest operating wineries. Vineyards stretch between 2,300 and 3,111 meters, making some the highest on earth. The "Altura Maxima" vineyard at 3,111m produces an extraordinary Malbec. The winery was acquired in 2001 by Swiss collector Donald Hess, who installed a James Turrell museum -- nine light installations creating sensations of infinite space and pure color. The combination of ancestral adobe village + cutting-edge light art is utterly unique. Advance reservation required (web or phone). Visit + tasting: USD 20-30. Full experience with lunch: USD 50-80.
