The Calchaqui Valleys Route Day by Day

Day 1: Tucuman → Tafi del Valle (107 km, 2 h)

Start in San Miguel de Tucuman. Drive west on RN 38 through the Yungas cloud forest, climbing from 450 m to 2,000 m in 2 hours. Stops: viewpoints, El Mollar village (Reserva Arqueologica Los Menhires), Dique La Angostura. Sleep in Tafi del Valle. Activities: cheese tasting, horseback ride, La Angostura sunset.

Day 2: Tafi → Amaicha → Quilmes Ruins → Cafayate (189 km, 3 h driving)

Cross the Abra del Infiernillo pass (3,042 m, panoramic photo stop) descending into the Calchaqui Valley. Lunch in Amaicha del Valle and visit the Pachamama Museum. Continue 15 km to Quilmes Ruins (allow 2–3 hours including the climb). Continue 70 km north on RN 40 to Cafayate (Salta) for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Cafayate (wineries + Quebrada de las Conchas)

Morning: tour 2–3 wineries (Bodega El Esteco, Bodega Domingo Hermanos, Finca Las Nubes). Try Cafayate Torrontes white wine. Afternoon: drive RN 68 into the Quebrada de las Conchas — red rock formations like El Anfiteatro, La Garganta del Diablo, Los Castillos. Return to Cafayate or push on to Salta.

Day 4 (optional): Cafayate → Salta or back to Tucuman

Option A: Continue north on RN 68 through the rest of the Quebrada to Salta capital (189 km, 3 h). Option B: Return to Tucuman via RN 40 + RN 357 + RN 38 (320 km, 5 h, less interesting). Option C: Add Cachi via RP 33 (epic 6 h drive over Cuesta del Obispo and through Los Cardones National Park).

How to Travel the Circuit

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Calchaqui Valleys Circuit?

The classic driving route that links Tucuman city → Yungas → Tafi del Valle → Amaicha del Valle → Quilmes Ruins → Cafayate (Salta), covering roughly 500 km of Argentina’s most diverse landscapes — from subtropical cloud forest to highland grassland to arid desert wine country, all in 3–4 days. The route uses RP 38, RP 307 and RN 40, all paved.

How many days do I need for the circuit?

Minimum 3 days at a brisk pace. 4 days is more comfortable. 5–7 days if you continue from Cafayate to Salta capital and complete the full NOA loop. Each main stop deserves a full day: Tafi (Yungas drive + Los Menhires + cheese), Quilmes Ruins (half day), Cafayate (wineries + Quebrada de las Conchas).

Should I rent a car or take a tour?

Rental car is best for flexibility — you can stop at viewpoints, eat where you want and adjust pace. Costs around USD 50–80/day for a small car plus fuel. Organised tours from Tucuman cost USD 180–250 for 3 days including transport, guide and accommodation. Buses connect the main towns but schedules are limited and you miss intermediate stops.

What is the best driving direction?

Start in Tucuman going west. Order: Tucuman → Yungas → Tafi del Valle → Amaicha → Quilmes → Cafayate. This way you experience the dramatic landscape change in sequence: jungle → mountains → desert → vineyards. End in Cafayate (or continue to Salta capital). Doing it in reverse works too but you lose the gradual elevation gain story.

Are the roads paved and safe?

Yes — RN 38 (Tucuman to Tafi via Yungas), RP 307 (Tafi to Amaicha), RN 40 (Amaicha to Cafayate), RN 68 (Cafayate to Salta) are all fully paved. Some sections are mountainous with curves; drive slowly, especially in fog, rain or at night. The dirt road to Quilmes Ruins is short (5 km) and well-maintained.

When should I do this trip?

April to November is ideal: dry roads, clear skies, mild temperatures. Avoid heavy summer rains (December-February) which can make the Yungas section foggy and trigger occasional landslides on the mountain passes. June-August has the clearest light but cold nights at altitude in Tafi (down to 0 C).

Can I connect to Salta and Cachi?

Yes. From Cafayate, RN 68 north climbs through the spectacular Quebrada de las Conchas (189 km, 3 hours) to Salta capital. Alternatively, take RP 33 west to Cachi (a stunning 6-hour drive over the Cuesta del Obispo and through Los Cardones National Park). The full NOA loop is Tucuman → Tafi → Cafayate → Cachi → Salta → back to Tucuman, around 7–10 days.

Is the circuit family friendly?

Yes — but with caveats. The drives are long (3–4 hours per segment) which can tire small children. Altitude reaches 3,042 m at Abra del Infiernillo (between Tafi and Amaicha). The Quilmes Ruins climb is moderate. Better for families with kids 8+. Plan flexible days, lots of stops and snacks.
