Tafi del Valle is a highland valley at 2,000 meters altitude in Tucuman province, Argentina (lat -26.8547, lng -65.7133), 107 km west of San Miguel de Tucuman. It is the mountain retreat of Tucumanos: cool climate year-round, unique artisanal Tafi cheese, the spectacular Dique La Angostura dam, and Los Menhires — a collection of 2,000-year-old carved standing stones. The drive from Tucuman through the Yungas cloud forest is an experience in itself, passing through subtropical jungle that gives way to highland grasslands. Tafi is a base for excursions to Amaicha del Valle and Quilmes Ruins.

How to Get to Tafi del Valle
By Car
107 km west of San Miguel de Tucuman on RN 38, fully paved, 2 to 2.5 hours of driving. The route climbs gradually through dense Yungas cloud forest, reaches the village of El Mollar (with the Los Menhires reserve and the La Angostura dam) and then opens into the wide highland valley where Tafi sits. Many viewpoints along the way.
By Bus
Empresa Aconquija runs several daily buses from Tucuman’s main terminal (3 hours, USD 8–12). Convenient and reliable but you miss the freedom to stop at viewpoints. Buy tickets online or at the terminal.
By Organised Tour
Full-day tours from Tucuman cost USD 45–55 with transport, guide and stops at the Yungas viewpoints, La Angostura dam, Los Menhires and lunch in the village. A 2-day version adds Amaicha and Quilmes Ruins (USD 130–180).
Onwards from Tafi
Tafi to Amaicha del Valle: 63 km (1h 15m) over the Abra del Infiernillo pass (3,042 m). Tafi to Quilmes Ruins: 119 km (2 hours). Tafi to Cafayate (Salta): 189 km (3 hours), one of the most beautiful drives in the country.
What to See and Do in Tafi del Valle
Reserva Arqueologica Los Menhires (El Mollar)
The collection of more than 100 carved standing stones, some over 3 m tall, created by the Tafi culture about 2,000 years ago. They were originally scattered across the valley as ceremonial markers. Today they sit in a fenced reserve with interpretive signs in the village of El Mollar, on the way into Tafi from Tucuman.
Dique La Angostura
The reservoir that supplies water and electricity to Tafi. Spectacular setting surrounded by mountains; popular for kayaking, sailing and trout fishing. The dam wall offers panoramic views of the entire valley. Restaurants line the shore.
Tafi Cheese Trail
Visit family-run "fabricas de queso" along RP 307 and around the village. Watch the traditional production process, taste samples and buy fresh wheels of artisanal Tafi cheese (semi-hard, slightly tangy, aged 30–60 days). The Festival Nacional del Queso happens every February.
Capilla Jesuitica La Banda
An 18th-century Jesuit chapel and museum on the outskirts of Tafi. The Jesuits introduced cattle and dairy production to the valley — the origin of Tafi cheese. Small but interesting collection of indigenous and colonial artifacts.
Horseback Riding and Trekking
The valley is ringed by the Cumbres Calchaquies (peaks above 4,000 m). Half-day horseback rides cost USD 25–40. Hikes range from gentle valley walks to multi-day expeditions to summit peaks like the Cerro Pelao.
The Yungas Drive
The 2-hour drive between Tucuman and Tafi through subtropical cloud forest is the experience itself — many travellers rate it the highlight of the entire trip. Stop at viewpoints, waterfalls and small Yungas villages.
When to Visit
- Best: Year-round — that is why Tucumanos escape here. Each season has its character.
- Summer (December-February): Cool relief from Tucuman’s heat (max 25 C). Lush green landscapes but more rain in the Yungas drive.
- Autumn (March-May): Crisp days, golden poplars in May, low rainfall. Excellent for photography.
- Winter (June-August): Cold but sunny. Frosty mornings, occasional snow on the surrounding peaks. Crystal-clear skies.
- Spring (September-November): Blossoms, mild temperatures, low season prices. Highly recommended.
