La Bombonera is more than a football stadium: it is a temple of sporting passion where 54,000 Boca Juniors fans generate an atmosphere that literally makes the stands vibrate. Located in the heart of La Boca, the Estadio Alberto J. Armando (official name) was inaugurated in 1940 and owes its nickname to its rectangular shape with a tall, steep lateral stand that gives it the appearance of a chocolate box (bombonera). It is considered one of the stadiums with the best atmosphere in the world and was named by FIFA as one of the most impressive sporting venues on the planet.
Boca Juniors is the most popular club in Argentina (and one of the most followed in the world), the club of Diego Maradona, Juan Roman Riquelme, Martin Palermo and Carlos Tevez. Six Copa Libertadores and three Intercontinental titles give the club a mystical aura felt in every corner of the stadium. Even if you are not a football fan, visiting La Bombonera is one of the most memorable experiences in Buenos Aires.

- Museo de la Pasion Boquense: two floors of trophies, historic jerseys, photos, videos and a 360-degree immersive room recreating the experience of being in the stands during a Superclasico.
- Dressing rooms: access to the visitors' dressing room and the tunnel to the pitch.

- Stands: climb into the popular end to appreciate the scale of the stadium.
The tour costs USD 10-15 and can be bought at the stadium box office (Brandsen 805) or on Civitatis in advance. It lasts 1 to 1.5 hours. It does not operate on match days (usually Sundays and some Copa midweek games).
Watching a match at La Bombonera
Attending a Boca match at La Bombonera is one of the most intense experiences you can have in Buenos Aires — and in the world. The stands literally tremble when 54,000 fans jump and sing in unison. However, getting tickets is not easy:
- Members: tickets are sold to club members first. Boca has over 300,000 active members and matches often sell out.
- Tourist packages (recommended): authorised agencies sell experiences including ticket (seated area), round-trip transfer, bilingual guide and merchandise. Price: USD 80-150 per person. The safest and most comfortable option for tourists.
- Superclasico (Boca vs River): tickets are nearly impossible to get. Tourist packages exceed USD 200-300 and sell out weeks in advance.
La Boca and Caminito
La Bombonera is a few blocks from Caminito, Buenos Aires' most colourful street. You can combine both visits in a morning: first the Bombonera tour and then a walk through Caminito, Vuelta de Rocha and Fundacion Proa (contemporary art, USD 3-5). Have lunch in the area with views of the Riachuelo before heading back to the centre.
How to get to La Bombonera
- Taxi/Uber: from Palermo USD 4-6, from the centre USD 3-5. The recommended option.
- Buses: lines 29, 33, 53, 64, 86 from the centre. Alight at Brandsen and Del Valle Iberlucea.
- No subway: La Boca has no subway stations. The nearest is Parque Patricios (Line H), 20 minutes on foot.
