Bodega Colomé

Bodega Colomé

Argentina's oldest winery (1831) — Altura Máxima vineyard at 3,111 m, the world's only James Turrell Museum, boutique estancia in Molinos

Bodega Colomé is the oldest continuously operating winery in Argentina, founded in 1831 by Nicolás Severo de Isasmendi y Echalar (the last Royalist governor of Salta before independence) in the heart of the Calchaquí Valleys, in the Molinos department, at 2,300 meters above sea level and roughly 200 kilometers south of Salta city (157 km north of Cafayate). Since 2001 it has belonged to Swiss magnate Donald Hess (of Hess Family Wine Estates, a global conglomerate with vineyards in Argentina, Switzerland, South Africa, the US and California), who transformed the property into one of the most singular wine destinations on earth — combining historic winery, extreme high-altitude vineyards, boutique hotel and contemporary art museum. The estate operates four distinct vineyards at staggered elevations: El Arenal (1,700 m, Cafayate), La Brava (1,750 m, Molinos), the Colomé estancia (2,300 m, main winery), and the legendary Altura Máxima (Payogasta, 3,111 meters above sea level) — one of the highest commercial vineyards in the world. The extreme conditions of Altura Máxima (UV radiation 8x stronger than at sea level, 25-30°C diurnal temperature swing, minimal humidity, arid stony soils) produce a Malbec with very thick skins, intense polyphenol concentration and acidic elegance that has scored consistently 95-98 points from Wine Advocate, James Suckling and Robert Parker. Bodega Colomé is a World's 50 Best Vineyards member. On the property sits the James Turrell Museum, the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to American light artist James Turrell (b. 1943, Pasadena, CA), inaugurated in 2009 with funding from Donald Hess and comprising 9 permanent installations created on-site by Turrell himself ("Unseen Blue", "Dhatu", "Tycho", "Slow Dissolve", "Blue Curtain", among others), all manipulating the perception of color and space through precise apertures aimed at the extraordinary Calchaquí Valley sky — the artist's famous "Skyspaces". Museum visits are guided in small groups (max 6 people) with exclusive sunrise and sunset slots when natural light enables the optimal experience. The on-site Estancia Colomé is the boutique hotel: 9 rooms in Casa Grande (4 vineyard-view suites, USD 580-780/night) and Casa Cerro (5 rooms, USD 480-650/night), full-board basis, paired meals included, horseback riding, trekking, stargazing (zero light pollution at 2,300 m), spa and outdoor pool with Andes views. 2-night minimum. Visit options: Winery + Turrell Museum tour (3 hrs, USD 65-95, two daily slots); Altura Máxima tour (half-day, USD 120-180, 4x4 to 3,111 m with on-site tasting); Estancia Colomé stay (USD 480-780/night all-inclusive). Always book ahead (info@bodegacolome.com) 1-3 months in advance. Access from Salta city: 5-6 hrs in 4x4 (last 80 km on gravel), or from Cafayate 3-4 hrs along the scenic RP 40 through Angastaco, San Carlos and Molinos. The estate closes January-February for rainy season; best months are March-November, optimal April-June (clear skies, post-harvest) and September-November (spring). Wines produced: Colomé Altura Máxima Malbec (USD 80-150), Estate Malbec (USD 30-50), Auténtico (no sulfites), Reserva Malbec, Lote Especial Tannat, Torrontés, Cabernet-Malbec blends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Bodega Colomé famous?

Bodega Colomé is the oldest continuously operating winery in Argentina, founded in 1831 by Nicolás Severo de Isasmendi (the last Royalist governor of Salta) in the heart of the Calchaquí Valleys. Owned by Swiss magnate Donald Hess (Hess Family Wine Estates) since 2001, it's internationally recognized for two unique features: (1) its "Altura Máxima" vineyard at 3,111 m above sea level in Payogasta — one of the highest commercial vineyards in the world; and (2) the James Turrell Museum on the property, the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to the American light artist. It's also a World's 50 Best Vineyards member and operates Estancia Colomé, a 9-room boutique hotel.

Where is it and how do I get there?

In Molinos, Salta's Calchaquí Valleys, roughly 200 km south of Salta city (5-6 hrs of driving combining RN 68 + RP 33 + RP 40 + RP 53 — the last 80 km are gravel road). From Cafayate it's 157 km north (3-4 hrs along the scenic gravel RP 40 through Angastaco, San Carlos and Molinos). You'll want a high-clearance 4x4 (river crossings during rainy season Dec-Mar). The estate has a private airstrip for charter flights from Salta. Ways to visit: own car, premium tour with transfer (USD 250-450 from Salta or Cafayate), or stay at Estancia Colomé.

What experiences does Colomé offer?

Four main options: (1) Winery + Turrell Museum tour (3 hrs, USD 65-95): tour of the winery, vineyards, optional lunch, full visit to the James Turrell Museum — only two daily slots, advance booking required; (2) Altura Máxima tour (half-day, USD 120-180): 4x4 excursion to the 3,111-m vineyard with on-site tasting + lunch; (3) Stay at Estancia Colomé (USD 480-780/night, 9 rooms): full board, all tours, museum, meals and transfers included — premium 2-3 night experience; (4) Private events: weddings, corporate wine tastings. Booking always required (info@bodegacolome.com) 1-3 months in advance.

What is the James Turrell Museum?

The James Turrell Museum at Estancia Colomé is the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to American light artist James Turrell (b. 1943, Pasadena, CA). Opened in 2009 with funding from Donald Hess, it houses 9 permanent installations created on-site by Turrell himself, including "Unseen Blue", "Dhatu", "Tycho", "Slow Dissolve", "Blue Curtain". The works manipulate the perception of color, space and natural light through precise apertures aimed at the extraordinary Calchaquí Valley sky — Turrell's famous "Skyspaces". Guided tours in groups of max 6 with sunrise and sunset slots (when natural light is optimal). Booking essential.

What's the "Altura Máxima" vineyard?

Colomé's Altura Máxima vineyard sits at 3,111 meters above sea level in Payogasta — one of the highest commercial vineyards in the world (rivaling some plots in Tibet and Bolivia). Planted in 2001 by Donald Hess with Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon clones from Bordeaux, it spans 11 hectares of arid soil at nearly 3,200 m. The extreme conditions (UV radiation 8x sea level, 25-30°C diurnal swing, minimal humidity) produce grapes with very thick skins, intense polyphenol concentration and unique acidic elegance. The Colomé Altura Máxima Malbec (USD 80-150/bottle) consistently scores 95-98 from Wine Advocate and James Suckling.

What's Estancia Colomé (the hotel) like?

The Estancia Colomé is the on-site boutique hotel — 9 rooms on a 39,000-hectare property at 2,300 m. Layout: Casa Grande (4 vineyard-view suites, USD 580-780/night) and Casa Cerro (5 rooms, USD 480-650/night). Full-board basis (breakfast + paired lunch + paired dinner), all winery and museum experiences included, transfers from airstrip, horseback riding, trekking and stargazing (zero light pollution at 2,300 m). Spa, outdoor pool with Andes view. 2-night minimum. Closed January-February (rainy season, roads cut).

When's the best time to visit?

March-November is the operating season (the estate closes Dec-Feb due to rains and washed-out roads). April-June is ideal: mild temperatures (10-22°C daytime), clear skies, just-finished harvest (high-altitude vineyards harvest March-April), low tourist traffic. September-November is spring with vineyard blossoms. Winter (Jun-Aug): quiet, cold at night (-5°C possible at 2,300 m, layer up), sunny days (15-18°C). Always pack SPF 50+ sunscreen (extreme UV at altitude) and lots of water (rapid dehydration).

Is the trip to Colomé worth it?

Yes — if your trip includes 4+ days in Salta and you want a deep, unique experience. It's not viable as a day trip from Salta (8 hours of driving destroys any meaningful visit) — you need at least one night at Estancia Colomé or to combine with a night in Cachi or Cafayate. The combination of Argentina's oldest winery + the world's highest vineyard + the planet's only Turrell museum + high-altitude landscape + boutique stay justifies the effort and cost (~USD 1,200-2,000 per person for 2-3 all-inclusive nights). For serious wine lovers, photographers and contemporary art enthusiasts it's a must-visit in Argentina.
